Fellers, I had bred my yellow gyp and had a litter 6 months ago.  The litter was a total of 7 and to this day 6 of the seven pups are already baying.  Heck 3 of them are already goin with older dogs in the woods and baying.  Well, the one I kept is not even baying in a pen yet.  Now in his defense I have not dedicated as much time as I should cause I had another pup to start in the woods.  He has seen a hog 3 times in a pen and wont even booger bark at it.  I have tried him with his momma all 3 times  i even caught the hog and flipped it and made it squeel. Now since I have almost culled one of the best dogs I have ever owned, due to my lack of patience, i would like to know what age would I be able to just take him back out of the pen and him turn on.  Cuz I'll be honest with you I dont know how many times I can stand him just hangin around my feet and I want to give him all the chance he deserves because of who his parents are.  Thanks for the help

i would give the pup more time. you can get caught up in the "their pups are doing better than mine" and cull the one you have. i would give the pup till they were a year old. then  i would give them a little more time, then i would cull if you still aren't getting anything from them.

I will not make a desision on a pup untill thry are a year old. One of the best young dogs I have right now really did not do much at all untill 12 months, now you could not buy him at any price. I raise and work whole litters every year and I could care less what they are doing at 6 months, if they hang out at my feet, no big deal. I make sure they enjoy their time in the field and pat them on the head every so often, I will never scold a young dog for not leaving me, pups need to feel secure to hunt. They are all differant and come around in differant ways. I have had many good dogs that would not work at all in a pen when they were young.

Hillbilly, thats what everbody is tellin me to do Just give him to them, Huh, I just aint got enough patience I guess. Really aint had to wait pass 5 months for a any of my cur dogs to start in pen, so it had me wonderin.  Like today, I was piddlin with him alittle, I got his attention with some of the horses behind the house and he went to bayin them through the fence.  I guess he just aint ready yet.....

if he is wanting to bay the horses, hav you thought of using him as a cattle dog, not a hog dog? i hav a gyp that did the same thing, she would work ever so often and then stop and hang around my feet. now she gets out and hunts, till she tires out and then she hangs close but so do the rest of my dogs

Well Charles, he'll either be a hog dog, or he want be my dog. I live in Central La. and i promise u I have no need for a cow dog.  In fact he will probally get his butt tore off if hes huntin with me and starts bayin a cow.  So he is just gonna have to adapt if he wants to make it. I just dont know why he aint started and the other ones have, i just dont want to keep feedin a dud.  You know what I mean
