Don't get either one, get a Chevrolet Duramax. That's what I've got and I really like it.

I like my old diesel with mechanical injection pump and no electronics for the mud. It is the axles that break with bigger tires so I keep my tires to a reasonable size and use the power of a diesel. But for pulling trailers I hate Ford. My dad likes Fords but he don't even know how many transmissions he has gone through. When it comes to trailers I would pay more attention to the transmission than the engine. Yeah make sure you got the engine but when the trans goes out it don't matter. That and the brakes. A diesel will have the torque for mud or pulling and the name doesn't matter. It is all about what you like. I will stick with old reliable stuff myself.

Mandi and I have been laboring over getting her a new truck. There is nothing very appealing about either engine that Dodge and Ford offer these days. EGR, mileage in the low teens, and too many electrical parts under the hood has us holding back.  Just today we were discussing the merits of purchasing a new truck and pulling the engine, and dropping a 12v in there. Mechanical pump, plenty of power available, and excellent mileage.

If I could find a 1998 Dodge quad cab, 3500 4x4, 12v with about 30-40k on it, I would be all over it....The new diesels don't have anything on the old 12v

Neither will perform that great in the mud with an engine that weighs 5000 pounds.  But for pulling, either will get the job done.  They all have injector problems, but the cummings seem to have less issues all around than the other two (Ford, Chevy).  Only problem is the truck will fall apart around a Dodge.  I have a 6.Uh-oh and am starting to have issues at 150K.

I am with country man 563.....get a 7.3 stroke

I had an 08 Dodge with the 6.7 and the auto and I really liked the truck but I never got more than about 10-11 miles/gallon in it and that just doesn't cut it.  I had an 07 Dodge with the 5.9 and an auto (that I should have kept) and would consistantly get 15-17 which isn't great but is atleast respectable.  I have had a 99 dodge auto for little while that I liked alot and was a good truck and I had a one ton dually six speed 02 model that I really liked except for the fact that it walked all over the road and while pulling a D3B it was a little exciting at times.  I truly think if someone gave me a bunch of money I would find a unbelievably clean 5.9 12 or 24 valve with a 5 or 6 speed and put a fuel pressure guage on it and drive it till it fell apart.  I found one the other day except it was an auto but it had something like 32K original miles and was an 01 model SPOTLESS and they wanted $19K for it.  That truck would last a person a long time and run better and get better mileage than anything new out there.  I think I would try a Dirtymax if I was going to drop $50K on a new one....

Your not gonna be happy buying a new diesel truck PERIOD. BUT, if I was buying a new one I would go for anything but a ford.
I am on my 3rd dodge first was a 97 12v 5spd, then a 99 auto, and now another 99 auto, and they have all been trouble free.

It all depends on your prefrence and if your gonna boost the engine with mods. The dodge is easier to work on putting mods on. Aint none of the mods cheap for any of the makers, but by having an inline you can acheive more torque sooner than having a V engine. I have an 06 dodge with the 5.9 and a 6spd man, a bigger turbo, programmer, exhaust and intake manifold and 5" exhuast and dual disc 1000hp rated south bend clutch and from what schnide diesel told me with what my add ons are, i should be pushing close 600hp on my high setting. I hav an 8" lift pulling 37's and i get 12-14 in town and 16-18 highway not pulling anything. I've got 92k on it and aint had a bit of trouble (knock on wood) out of the engine and i run royal purple due to the warranty they offer for mechanical oil related issuse. It all boils down to what YOU want, but if your gonna be doing any pulling stay with a manual tranny, the autos SUCK for all 3 makers especialy dodge. Go spend $50 on different diesel magazines and read the reveiws for all 3 maker b4 making your mind up. Oh and STAY AWAY from the 6.7L dodge, get an 06 or early 07 if you go with dodge. Oh and for you bowtie guys, a buddy of mine that used my tck while i was in iraq raced his brother that HAD a durajunk and auto, the only time the chevy had anything on him was off the line and till my tck got into 3rd gear and it was nothing but his brother choking on the fumes  Grin Grin .

Here we go. No diesel is great in the mud.
1999 F-350, 7.3l, 6 speed, 4x4, single cab, single wheel.
Had over 800,000 miles when it left my place.
2 clutches, a front axle and a set of injectors is all I did beyond regular maintenance.
Sold it to by my current rig, 1998 3/4 Dodge with a 12 V and auto.
About to roll 150,000 and hope to own it, and keep the body together as many miles as the Ford.
Had an 04 Duramax with an Allison.
Although it was by far the most comfortable, it wouldn't pull a sick whore off the pot.
It's all about preference, and feasability.

My company runs all three: Chevy, Ford and Dodge.  Dodge: engine is the only thing that is durable.  Ford: well built truck with TONS and TONS of injector problems.  Chevy: total package, no problems to date.
