Well I wish I could say that Ringo went out from a bad boar or sittin on the front porch from old age. Unfortunately not the case. I came home from work Tues morning and my wife told me he had killed a coon in the ditch behind our house. I looked at him and he had some bites, but it was nothing he hadn't had before. I didn't worry about it much. I left and when I got home that afternoon, his face and neck were about 2 times there normal size. I started him on antibiotics and gave him benadryl in case he got bit by something poisonus. He seemed to stay the same through the night and was drinking and urinating. Last night he seemed a little worse so I decided I would take him to the vet this morning. I went hunting last night and when I got home he was out of it and squalling and howling in a unconscious state. I took him to the emergency vet and they said it would be several thousand and then it would be only about a 30% chance of him getting his health back. He does have a rabies shot and the vet didn't seem to think this was the case. I have a hard time believing that after all the cuts he has had those little raccoon bites did this to him that fast. In hindsight I wonder if maybe there was a snake involved to and maybe I should have treated more aggresively for that. Anyway, He was a good hog dog, a good friend and if I ever get a dog like him again I will feel real lucky. Sure wish I had a puppy.

I know that sucks. I thought a dog had got in a fight with another dog and his head was swollen up. It turn out to be a snake bite while he was in his kennel and I had almost shot the other dog. It is just one of those crappy things and I feel your pain.

Ringo was a darn good looking dog. Sorry to hear of your loss. You might never find one just like him again but you'll eventually find one you like just as much just in a different way and for different reasons.
