Best hog bait?

We've got a few properties that hold some big hogs, problem is they're spread out on huge areas.   It's real hard to figure out where they'll be at any given time, as they tend to travel long distances for whatever reason.

What bait would be the most efficient to hold a boar hog's attention?  Corn is useless, as even soured corn is just devoured by deer and coons.  I've never tried any of the sow estrus stuff... will it really hold them or just make them check in once in a blue moon?

I've always avoided baiting in general because of all the "off" game it brings in... hard to keep dogs from trashing when you keep putting it in front of them...

Any secret recipe's?

I got a recipe that we have used and has worked really well to draw in some hogs what you do is get a 5 gallon bucket pour a gallon of milk in it put a loaf of bread in it and fill the rest with corn put a lid on and shake it up and bury it for about a week that stuff will be rank but the hogs love it i dont know about other animals coming to it though but it works for hogs. Also what draws hogs is laying out an 8ft telephone pole that has been soaked in creasote or you can pour deisel or oil on it the hogs love to rub all in it that will surely draw them in. Good Luck!

Also to draw in those big boars some trappers i know keep a sow in a pen inside a big trap if you were able to keep a sow in a trap or cage near that will get the big boars coming aroun.

ive been wondering about fermented sorghum or sugar cane , maybe even after its pressed. anybody tried that?

sour some in a bucket or barrel then dig a two foot hole in the ground with post hole diggers then pour in the wheat the hogs will tear that place up

thats alot harder to do this time of year,, you have to make sure she has shade and water all the time or she will die,,

I've been putting balck gold on some trees to try to concentrate some pigs in areas where I let the dogs out.  The pigs have completely rubbed the bark off of these trees within a couple of nights.  I could only imagine how well it would work inside of a trap.

i dont no if you lads have this stuff over there but melasiss (dont no if spelt right) is the best stuff to attract pigs around here . either that or hang a roo up in a trap and cuts its guts open but you guys dont have them there

pilli, do you mean molasses, like you put on bread and biscuits. if so its made from pressing the juice out of sorghum, wich is kinda like sugar cane. i know hogs love it, we used to feed the pressed cane to domestics after we made mollasses. if you let it ferment i bet theyed come from miles, maybe have less trouble from off game too. when i was a kid wed laugh for hours  watching them drunk hogs stumble around after eating that stuff. probably be a good time to work some pups. lol

I saw some guys using what they called "Pig Pipes" one time and the idea was pretty interesting.

They took a piece of PVC about 5" in diameter and appx. 5' long and drilled holes all in it just big enough for corn to pass through.  Cap both ends, then attach a chain to one end and lay it on the ground fastening the chain to a tree.  The hogs would bump and roll those things around getting the corn to fall out of the holes.

I suppose deer might push them around also, but it might be worth a shot.

  I have some pig pipes, but keeping them filled with corn is expensive. mine have three 3/4" holes, and the pigs can get 50# of corn out in one night.

i like to take a pair of post hole diggers and dig down 3 or 4 feet and fill it with corn or maize and pour kool aid on it and bury it.
the hogs have to work for it. and they stay longer. deer cannt get at it.

Anyone ever tried Hog Heaven? I just bought some and suppoedly it was used to kill Hogzilla..

yeah hog heaven works well and theres quite a few commercial attractants that will git-r-dun.  the only problem with these is the cost of the product vs the ease of making it yourself.  Heres what I recommend (for what its worth)          1-50# sack of oats, 10# corn and 30# packets of strawberry or raspberry gelatin mix. mix all together and its ready to go makes 60 pounds of bait for about 25 bucks or buy commercial dry bait for two bucks per pound.
