I got one that is supposed to be 1/2plott 1/2cat but I think she is full plott, dont see any catahoula in her at all. She is silent until looking at a hog but if the hog breaks and she can still see him she opens. The odds for a full hound being silent are probily 1 in 500 or 1 in 1,000. Heres a pic of lucy

lucy, defenitly shows catahoula, i have or have had both, and the crosses. the markins over the eyes is a dead giveaway. I have owned hounds for over 15 yrs, finding a totally silent full hound is very hard, some strains have more mouth than others, and of course each dog and every dog has its own personality. i have had a few of my hound / cur crosses start out opening, but learn on their own that they wont have to run them as far if they dont advertise that they are coming. and i have some hounds that think that more barking slows the game down so they can catch it, lol . They are out there (silent hounds) but you might have more luck finding a 6 leaf clover.

I have a half Plott, half Catahoula female that is totally silent on the track. I had a male Plott a few years ago that was 100% pure Plott from my buddy's strain going back 25 years, he was totally silent on track, but having hunted with hounds for 40 something years I've only seen maybe 3 pure hounds that were totally silent on track, they just aren't very common I reckon. Like an old man I heard say once..."Even where there's a lot of 'em, there's not many of 'em."

only silent hounds ive seen were crockett plotts that a bear hunter had in north carolina, they would run with other plotts that would be open and they would stay silent till the got to the bear. now crockett plotts arent your normal plotts of today, they are old line plotts that show the cur side of how the plott used to be. very gritty and not all of them are silent by no means but i never hunted with one that would just be open brawl they mgiht be open but it was a chop and not a brawl.
if you can ever find a crockett plott, get it becasue they are hard to find.

koyote, who has those crocket plotts, i would like to get my hands on a full crocket dog, i have one that is mostly crocket, but has some weems in there too. I used to have mostly crocket dogs years ago, but ended up getting rid of them all, i used to have one that was totaly silent on track and gritty as they come. i have been tryin a different strain over the past couple years but have decided to go back to the crocket line, they worked really well for me.

I would have to say silent hounds are pretty rare. I have only heard of silent hounds but have never personally seen one.

well i lived in north carolina for about seven yrs and hogs were few and far between and just so happened that my three best buds who were all brothers hunted bears. turns out everyone in thier family had plotts and all thier friends had plotts....from tnn,nc, and va. so i got in with them and a few of the family had crocketts. and i really liked them over all the plotts. but they were gettin up in age, they said i could have some pups but all the breedings were failed attemps. so i never got one. turns out that my buddies cousin was realted to the founder of houston valley plotts and those were some good plotts and when i first moved to carolina i lived right down the road from john jackson and i didnt even know it. lol now im back in ga and they come down and dog hogs and i go up there and dog bear. it was a fun time and i met alot of great plott men and just hunters and general. its funny how all the bear hunters worried about hogs cutting down dogs and all the hog hunters worried about bears killing curs lol. was just up there this past wknd, but my schedule got overloaded and i couldnt meet with some guys i wanted to about gettin a crockett....im also searching for one. you need to talk to country mikes........hes got some females.....i think hes trying to breed her one last time... i cant even find a true 100% weems plott! and the only crocketts i can find are only a certain percentage true crockett. why did you get rid of your crocketts? im gonna stick with curs as they suit me....but i sure would love to throw a crockett in my pack i dont care if hes silent or not. always heard that they had a little bulldog in them which would explain alot but who really knows.
