and I told her it has to have a job. Since she will not let me use it on hogs she wants to train it for bird hunting. Anybody have any suggestions or links for her to read on how to do this? I have never had nor trained a bird dog so we will both be learning. The pup is only about 8 to 10 weeks old but she would like to start learning about it now. Thanks for the help.

I would highly recommend the book "Water Dog" by Richard Wolters.  I covers everything from basic obedience , all the way to advanced retriever training.  I have had great success training all of my labs with this book.

I must be a dumbazz. I hate the water dog books. Outdated in my mind. I perfered the Smart Works ones. I did some training myself nd then sent her off for 3-4 months for force fetch and to start her on blinds. Best money I ever spent. My lab over heated last september. Hasnt been the same. As alot of hearing loss and ability to remember.

There is a reason ALOT of pros have their programs built around Evan Graham's Smart Work program. I havent met a pro yet that uses waterdog. I think waterdog is alot easier to follow along with but some of it I just dont get. I am far from a dog trainer, like I said I sent mine off to get some of her work done. Force fetch is where you can make or break a dog.

If it works so well, why did you have to send your dog off?Huh?Huh?

I've trained all my own retrievers and a few of my friends retrievers and the video I used when i first started is Waterdog. The video doesn't go into as good of detail as the book, but will teach you enough to have a good retriever.

I would start playing fetch right away, but make it fun dont make it a job, you can start working on the other stuff later, but the water dog books are the best
