Had a long time hog hunter tell me there ain't nothing worse than rough dogs that bite and nip at a hog when "bayed up" instead of catching. Said all they do is educate hogs if they get away. Makes sense to me. How many of ya'll have had a dog that would bite the hog but not really catch solid ?

You sure don't want a bay buster for a dog I've had a few and they will drive you crazy.  But if the hog breaks before the cd gets there I sure want one to stop him.

"Bay Busters"... I've been through a mess of them. Can't stand them and they don't last long around here.

Now,I love my loose baying dogs, but most all of them won't hesitate to latch onto a hog's a$$ if needed, but then they back way up and bay.

I believe what the old timer told you is true.

It aint no sense in a baydog touching a hog period, unless the hog tries to run.  Then its suppose to do its job, stop it and bay it.....  A catchy dog is needed sometimes in a pack because of the different hogs out there, some hogs will not bay and will turn tail and run period....It dont matter if the bay dogs stop it and stop it somemore, it aint gonna fight. Thats when you need one to just grab and hold until you get there.

I have had a few bay breakers. I think they are a big reason for the bad runners we have around here in some places. I also think a catchy dog will make a bad runner just run harder. They will get culled around my house even when its hard to cull them. The instant frustration I have with them works every time though.  Wink

I personally want my bay dogs to bay and my catch dogs to catch although I don't have a problem with catchy dogs.  I know a lot of people that put 5-6 catchy curs on the ground and catch lots of hogs.

I don't have a place for dogs that will nip at a bayed hog.

If you have one catchy dog in your pack, then the rest better be also.  Mixing the two types will have you chasing hogs all over the country.

I personally don't care for them.  I'd rather see my curs doing what they were bred for.

Mixing?  Huh? Maybe thats why I have such an issue with them. They dont mix good with my other dogs. I have never hunted behind an entire pack of catchy dogs. Maybe I would have a different opinion of them if I did.

There aint much that can piss me off more than a catchy dog running in on a bayed hog, causing it to bust out and head for the next county. One of my gyps did it a few times and I was sick about it. Thank the Lord she grew out of it fast! She will bay a shoalt now.

I think you better have all or nothing in a dog.
If you run baydogs then they better be straight bay or gritty they better latch on til you get there, no inbetween.
If you have a gritty dog then he shouldn't try and catch then not commit to it.

Glad u brought this subject up cause a guy said that rough dogs are not the best at hloding a bay BY ITS SELF because it pressures the hog and add strees 2 the hog that causes the hog 2 become more cautious of it's surroundings or a gun hunter/ catch dog but these dog r great in groups being able 2 shut down the big boar

That's what I meant by catches but doesn't commit to it. A dog like that will bust it every time.

I run two dogs. One will bay and catch on a big rank hog by herself but will flat out catch it when another dog gets there. The other one is straight catch and they work well together.
