I hunt with a guy that runs Plotts.  All of which are what I call wide open.  The three dogs I've raised while hunting with him have never started running open just because of the hounds.  I've also given him 2 or 3 curs and he hunts them every day with his hounds and their still silent.

I think it's bred into the dogs to run open and not necessiarily a learned trait.

I also have a dog that will yip on track, she's 7 or 8 now and has run with lots of pups and none of them picked up her traits.

I'm not an expert but that's my experience with it.

I have had it ruin a cur, and have one now that will open up after they break or on a real hot track every 5th hunt or so from running him with a semi open hound mix when he was 7-10 mo. old. I wouldnt do it b/c of my experience with those 2 curs.

I'll have to agree 100% with KevinO. My experience exactly.

I raised a pltt dog with totally silent catahoulas, and he still became his own dog and is semi open.  His dad was totally silent and mother was too, go figure!!!
