This hunt would have never happened if we didn't have this nice message board....thanks Mike! I contacted another member from this forum (kauaiboy) about possibly getting together for a hunt while I was on vacation in Hawaii. We emailed a few times and it was set up. Tim came to pick me up at the little bed and breakfast we were staying at at 5:30am. This was pretty much a dream hunt for me weather we caught one or not. I got to hike some of the most beautiful jungle you could ever imagin. I got to go where no other tourist had ventured before and meet some great people, that's what made it memorable. We struck out along a nice open trail and I thought the treck would be easy but we soon got off the trail and started bushwacking it....when I say bushwacking it I mean BUSHWACKING IT! Tim had his machete going most of the time. He told me to bring some baseball cleats for the steep trails and I was glad I stopped and got a pair, they came in handy. I know everyone has their opinion on thick brush and we all think "our brush is thicker than yours" but I'm here to tell you this was the thickest stuff I'd ever hunted in. I've hunted from South Texas to East Texas. From Oklahoma to Louisiana and I've yet to see a tangle of brush like on this island. Now there wasn't much that would stick or prick you but the tangle of ferns, bushes, trees, etc...was thicker than most of the stuff I've ever hunted in. We didn't catch one but it really didn't matter to me. We were actually going to hunt a private ranch, where they filimed Jurassic Park, but they had another film crew coming in to check the place out to film Pirates of the Carribiean 4. So at the last minute we had to change plans and hit the jungle. I met some very generous people and couldn't thank them enough for the hunt and hospitality. I got to experience a different style of hunting than I'm use to and over all had a great time. Tim, I really appreciate it and like I said before if you ever want to come to Oklahome for a hunt, weather it be deer, turkey or hogs you have a standing invitation. All I had was my iphone for pictures so here are a few. Open trail going in. Something we don't see very often....

That is pretty cool Kevin, looks like something out of a fairy tail with all that flora around. A big toothy island boar would have been nice but that is something to see there for sure. Do they have alot of biting insects over there, looks like a mesquito haven for sure. Matt

Thanks everyone! It was quite the experience. I enjoyed that more than anything else we did while we were there. It was all great but experiencing their style of hunting was priceless to me. We had 7 dogs on the ground. If Tim reads this he'll have to explain but I believe we had two bulldogs (pits) that hunted like a cur, a doberman crossed with a "plot dog". Different than our Plott hounds, smaller ears, not open and rough or all catch. If I had to compare them I'd say they were more our style of cur dogs. We had a couple of dogs with whippet in them.....just a good variety pack of catchy dogs. He wanted them to engage on contact. We actually got outrun by a small "bullet or torpedo" as they call them right off the bat. Heard a few yips and it was off to the races. A small hog is no match for a dog in that stuff....from what I understood they'll usually win due to the thick "tangle fern" that a dog just can't run through. He said at times it took 1 1/2 hours to get to a catch 250 yards away. Here in Oklahoma we have black berries everywhere. Over in Kauai they had Raspberries. Stopped at the farmers market and had to try the "Kauai boar". Anyway hopefully Tim will see this and fill in what I left off. KO

Bigainabuilt, thanks for the advice on contacting Kauaiboy. If I ever come to the big island....I'm calling you! LOL! ZachW, you just got to have connections like me. LOL! Tim was gracious enough to take me on the hunt free of charge. He wouldn't even let me pay for his gas and it's $3.86+ a gallon over there! He came 30 minutes out of his way to come pick me up and had everything I needed including a knife. All I had to do was show up. Honestly he went way out of his way to show me a hawaiian style hog hunt which exceeded my expectations. We met a couple of his hunting buddies up on the mountain that were hunting a different spot and all invited me back anytime. They called several times checking to see when and if I could make another short hunt on the private ranch. Unfortunately what they didn't understand is my wife had every second of every day booked with something and it wasn't in her plans to hog hunt while on vacation. LOL! KO

Dang, I just got back from my honeymoon in Maui. i didnt think the new wife would like it, so I didnt set anything up before hand. Once we were there I decided to ask this old hawian lady at a gas station if she knew any hog hunters....sure enough she did, she got my number a few hours later I had a call from a guy. We set up to go huntin on my last day there since I had already scheduled bunch of stuff the other days. His name is Casey and he sounded cool on the phone and seemed excited to take a hunter from Texas out on a hunt. With my luck, he had to go in to work and I got stuck with all the anticipation and no hunt. I had a great time in Maui except for my last day. The wife is set on going back for a 2 year anniversary, so I will be sure to set one up then.

I was fortunate enough to hunt while on my honeymoon. We hunted within sight of Pearl Harbor. It was a dream of mine for years and my wife was great in "allowing" me to go. The guys in Hawaii are great and very gracious hosts. I wanna go back just to hunt but the long flight makes that difficult. I highly recommend going there to hunt if you can.

Hey Kevin! I'm glad you liked the hunt sorry bout not catching anything. I really thought nobody been into that valley in a while . That last valley we went into way in the back where we found those pig carcasses, not too many guys hunt that far deep but i guess the week before our hunt someone decided to go and they caught 3 pigs . I'd love to take you up on your offer to go hunting up there one of these days. And if you ever come back let's go again . Bino9905, i might know that kid Casey you talked to on Maui if his last name is Casco, he bought 3 pups from me a few months ago. He has permission to hunt some good pig hunting property. But if you or any of you on here ever come to Kauai, Hawaii i'll be happy to take you guys on a pig hunt. Message me on here or email me at kelii_nui@hotmail.com. I'll see if i have more pics of the hunt i took Kevin on and i post it on here. Oh and Kevin i also might take you up on that offer on getting a Cur or a Dogo or maybe both
