Im pretty sure one of my dogs got bit by a brown racluse spider.  On Friday the ranch hand treated him for what seemed like a small cut, today it was about the size of a quarter and about 1/2 an inch deep.  You could see where the live muscle is dying.  He got bit in his back leg.  Has anyone ever treated for this and what did you do?  Vet is not open until Monday.  I have injected him with pennecillin, hydrated the area with water, and sprayed with furazone (i think thats what its called).  Anything else?

thanks in advance,

Recluse bites are nasty...Keep doing what you're doing and take him to the vet on Monday.

My buddy had a recluse bite on his arm, starts like a pimple gets bigger and bigger, but won't pop.

it will get worse witout treatment.

They will probably drill out the dying flesh and pack it with gauze, and give meds.

don't wait, go to the vet...

you need a stronger antibiotic. Clavamox and Baytril together is probably what you need for the dog

Just curious, why would you stack antibiotics? It's one or the other.
It's bad advise to be mixing drugs like that... you either start at the top with Baytril or start with Clavomax and work your way up to Baytril if Clavomax doesn't work. Also, Baytril will cause joint problems in dogs under 2 months old.

Here's what a simple search on the internet brought up;

______________________________________________________________________

At home, clean the wound with hydrogen peroxide, chlorhexidine or povidone iodine. Do not use a tourniquet; because the venom stays in the area of bite, a tourniquet is not necessary. The tourniquet may cause circulation damage.

If you see your pet acting lethargic, begin vomiting or the wound becomes larger, it is strongly recommended that you bring your pet to the veterinarian. Treatment may be necessary to reduce these symptoms.

Your veterinarian will treat the bite wound and may give your pet antibiotics to prevent infection. Surgery may be necessary to remove the skin around the affected area, if other treatments do not heal the wound. Generally, pets recover fully from these spider bites after several weeks.

_____________________________________________________________________

Either drug by itself that ushog recomended will work. Personally, I prefer Baytril, you only give it once a day unless by personal preference you like to go BID. All other Antibotics are BIDaily or every 12 hours.

Hope

Just repeating what the vet told me. Clavamox and Baytril together is the strongest antibiotic combination  you can give to a dog but it is expensive.

Wolverine, based on experiance with horses and dogs, mixing some drugs is not a good idea, however, one of the best treatments for parvo includes hitting the dog with both baytril, and penn-auquous. I a horse has an abscess, the best treatment is to hit them with bio-penn and iodine/sugar in the hole. Mixing meds isn't deadly as long as you consult with a vet, and use common sense.

this was taken a few days ago, it looks like its getting better.  It has not gotten any bigger.  I hope there is a difference by Thursday as I dont want him to go under the knife.  Keeping my fingers crossed.  This dog is a blood tracking fool!  I have found many wounded deer with him.

Just a few pics of Dig getting the job done!

We earned out money on the second one, started raining prior to getting there, when he got to the deer, coyotes had started on the deer, look at his ass.  They chased Dig off the first time, as soon as he got some support, we pushed the yotes off and the deer broke.  We had a good chase till Dig and my other dog Sadie stopped him and bayed him up. The funny thing was that the ranch manager kept complaining that there was no blood on the ground and that he wanted to go back to the start.  As soon as we got close to a road, I sent him back to the starting point while I kept working the dogs.  Not 5 minutes from him leaving, the dogs bayed the buck. He was pissed b/c he didnt get to see the dogs bay....trust your dogs   Grin
