I am getting a little worried bout my dog. He got a small cut in his belly on a hunt back on June 6th.  it was a real small cut on his stomach so I didn't think much of it. well I noticed 4 or 5 days later that the cut had gotten infected so I gave him penicillin for 3 days and the swelling in his stomach drained out and he was looking okay. We even hunted him the next weekend and he ran fine.  Well I didn't hunt this last weekend cause of father's day but I noticed he had another smaller swelling in his stomach again. So I gave him pencillin everyday since sat. night and when I looked at him this morning his stomach wasn't really swollen but his NUTS LOOKED BIG and swollen for sure and they don't feel right. Any idea what is going on? He is still eating and drinking just fine and looks healthy except for the swollen nuts and his chest still feels wet like its still draining. any help is appreciated, but if it doesnt look any better soon I will just take him to the vet I guess.

Sounds like swine brucellosis, but no way to tell for sure without a vet visit.

Sounds correct Bryant. That is what I thought based on a few friends experieces lately, seems it is going around pretty good.

What is the typical treatment for swine brucellosis? should I just try and treat him first and see if it starts to improve? he looks healthy except the swollen nuts and minor cuts and I don't want to spend $$ at the vet if it is avoidable, of course if his condition worsens any than I definitely will. Is it contagious at all to me or the other dogs?

Get him to the vet asap, if one ruptures all the infected fluid will go up inside him and he'll probably die... or have an extensive stay at the vet.

I've had four with it, one pulled through after three months of antibiotics, two lost their nuts and one died.

Mine were treated with 500mg of tetracycline pills, twice a day for 30 days... if it comes back, 30 more days. Not all antibiotics work on brucellosis.

well I took him to my vet today but he's kind of a cheaper vet.  I told them the whole story and that I thought he had brucellosis and that he needed tetracycline pills. They didn't really do any test on my dog or anything, but did a quick examination of his swollen testicle.  I guess they agreed with me that brucellosis was most likely the cause.  They gave my dog an anti inflammatory shot to help the swelling go down, and the tetracycline pills.  Said to give him (1) 500mg pill every 8 hrs for 12 days straight.  The vet basically said, "whether its brucellosis or not, the pencillin you gave didn't kill whatever it is thats making his testicle swollen, so hopefully the tetracycline will." And if the swelling didn't go away in 3-4 days to call them.  I didn't want to get stuck with a huge bill or anything so I guess I'm glad he didn't do any special tests to determine if he really had brucellosis or not, but it would have been nice to know for sure what I'm dealing with.

According to my vet, the swollen testicle is pretty much a sure thing for the brucellosis. It may come back after the first round of treatment. I treated three dogs one time for three rounds. It kept coming back a couple of weeks after each treatment period. Finally, one pulled through, but the other two had to be neutered... they were fine after that.

They all blood tested positive for swine brucellosis and verified by an outside lab.

How long after you began administering treatment did it take before you began to notice a reduction in swelling of his testicle? I have been giving him 3 pills a day for the last 3-4 days but the swelling does not seem to have gone down any.
