I think a lot of it has to do with certain people look at their dogs differently. Personally i think b/c i raise and become close to my dogs i want to be there if something happens. Its not about not trusting as much as just wanting to be there more than anything. I look at my dogs, even though they might not be "the best dogs" out there as IRREPLACEABLE. I know a lot of people that hunt dogs look at them as just "tools" like a gun or boat or deer stand and a lot of people look at them as members of the family. I agree with the latter and frown upon loaning them out as such. I PERSONALLY would never ask to borrow anyones dog just like i dont like borrowing ANYTHING that i can not replace if i break it or it dies on my watch. If i have the cash in hand to replace a material item (ie.boat, gun) then i feel it's ok to borrow it but it's obvious that a dead dog cannot be replaced so i stay away from that all together. In the end it boils down to everyone looking at things differently and that should be respected by everyone else. good thread

I would even let my old lady borrow my dogs
Well I told my husband last night if he doesnt take me hunting now that his shift has changed back to having weekends off I was going to find someone else to hunt with.....his response "yeah with their dogs cause you aint taking none of these!"... but I lay claim to atleast one bay dog so I am good, he is alll I need lol We dont lend our dogs out at all, heck we dont even hunt behind someone elses catch dog...if our dogs go then we go and our catch dog goes - period. We do not hunt with many people and they know how fennicky we are about the dogs, my brother in law asked one time to borrow some of them and I beat my husband to the punch with a "not no but **** NO". I asked my husband if he would let the man that taught him everything take his dogs (not that he would ever ask cause he surely dont need them) and he even said no, which surprised me. We run his puppies from time to time or a catch dog that needs fine tuning but would NEVER even think of asking to use his finnished dogs. I am not even sure our dogs would hunt with out us or hunt that well....heck they are snooty enough when there are new/strange dogs or people!

I completely agree because no one is going to take care of or worry about your dogs as much as you. They may tell you they will be careful or watch out for them but if the worst happens and you aren't there who is to say they are trying their hardest to fight for your dog or to keep it alive?

I have two good friends that I would let borrow my dogs. They wouldn't leave the woods until they found my dog dead or alive when I would've just went and looked for them the next day.
If one of my dogs gets killed oh well, there is more out there that will find a hog, it ain't going to change a thing if you are there or not if they get on a rank one that gets em. My dogs are tools to me, no emotional attachment at all.

Dogs, cars, and/or anything of value.
It really boils down to the relationship and trust you have in your friends and the relationship you build. I have friends that could borrow any dog that I own, fourwheeler, truck, rifle, pistol and any thing else.

I'm blessed with a few friends that I would let hunt my dogs. I consider myself lucky.

As hunters/outdoorsman it seems that we have a greater respect for nature and the outdoors than most people. We spend countless hours in the woods and swamps learning to become closer to nature and learning all we can about the wildlife that is found there. I know that the majority of us believe that there is higher power out there that made nature possible for us to enjoy. With that being said why is it you think that some hunters/outdoorsman look at a dog, which is a living breathing creature with obvious capabilities of expressing emotion, as just a tool? Again i totally respect that not everyone thinks alike i just am interested in this school of thought. For example; Does a general in the army, whose only goal is to win a war, view the men under his command as merely tools to get a job done? I probably opened up a can of worms but........im bored......lol.
