As for me i have spent way more money on my dogs than i ever thought i would. I did this to get what i wanted. A Big boned gritty catahoula. the reason i breed is to keep a male like zeke around so i will hopefully always have a part of him around i gave away one good looking big male to a friend for workin cattle.with the understanding if need be i could breed him if something happens to zeke. I spend a lot of money to raise the dogs and i ask a fair price for the pups 300-400 in most cases. I have and will stand behing my word. I get great pleasure hearing back from the buyers and have had no complaints. I have read several threads about dog peddlers and to "beware of them" it seems to me that if your name is not hot topic on ethd you are lumped into a peddler bracket?? I feel that if I put a good dog up for sale for a fair price and it works out great, then it is a win win. I dont think for a minute that the higher the price the better the dog Grin

Why so much for a good dog? It's like anything else, SUPPLY AND DEMAND. If all hog dog breeders only bred the best from line breeding and no exceptons then we would have a surplus of good dogs and the price would come down on good strike dogs.

If you do not have tons of money..... then one good option is to go and buy some high quality pups and train them yourself. I just bought 2 for 100 dollars each and the sire and dam are not for sale. The pedigree is awesome. I believe that one will make a good strike dog by how it acts and the other has a good chance. I had to see the sire and dam before buying the pups but also knew the dogs in the pedigree. The kind of hog dogs I want or keep are not for sale or they want an arm and a leg for them....

Another thing I found out when buying a dog never say beforehand what your looking for in a pup or dog because some sellers seem to have just what your looking for. HAVE THEM TELL YOU WHAT THEY HAVE OR BREED. If they can't tell you what you want to here chances are they don't even know what a good hog dog is much less be able to breed one.....

Know what yall mean about Uncle Earls, been there twice and there was somebody selling " woods dogs" for $250  on every little piece of dirt at the place..
I can see someone charging $250 for a well bred pup off proven parents. I have some now that I wouldn't sell for any less. But unless you have hunted with dogs off that line and hunted with the parents you don't really know what you are getting. And most of the time if someone who hunts regularly and has proven dogs, has a littler of pups off those dogs none of them will be for sell.
sfboarbuster, I take it you were joking about the real hogdogs for 500 bucks , If not I wanna know where this place is cause we can make some good money laugh

I will sell my pups if they are worth selling. I dont go over board with it though. I am selling a mt cur pup today for fifty bucks. But this dog is three month old and has been bayin a little pig in a pen for three weeks. I will even put the pup in the pen and show him. Im not in hog hunting to make money off of my dogs. I have only sold two grown dogs in the three and a half years i have been hunting. And one of them i bought back.  Just last week i gave away four dogs. Because i have three of them have never been in the woods and the other has only been four or five time. That way people cant talk my name down because the dog didn't meet there standards or didn't hunt for them like they did for me. But i do have a dog that i would not sell for 1000 bucks. and he is a little ugly half pit half cur. but i have raised him since he was a pup and have put alot of time into him.

Nick,

Is the pup still for sell, what is he out of?
Some of the best dogs come from hunters that have the exact same philosophy as you do....

I'm just talking about a good started dog. Something that has a chance of making a dog.
Not somebody elses cull. Guess I worded it wrong.

Nick that is my exact same thinking.  My concience would not let me make money off something for junk dogs or other stuff.  I have a couple of dogs like u said that are not for sale not because they are great but because I like them.

i picked my little red dog up off the side of the road. sign said free pups take one. Now he will find and stop his own hog. Wouldn't take a thousand dollars for him.

The question shouldn't be "Why are hogdogs so much"..........

the question should be "WHY ARE HOGDOGS SO CHEAP"?

Dog feed for 1 dog for a year $250......multiply by 4 years to finish out a dog......now you got $1000

A couple of fix-ups at the vet in that 4 year period.......$1000 (very conservative)

so now your at $2000.....then multiply that by the 4 dogs your gonna raise to find one that is worth braggin on or that manages not to get killed.......

now your at $8000...........why the hell would anyone raise a dog? lol......you can go buy a nice dog for $1500

There you have it.....Dan has put the pencil to it and I think he's right on the money. I agree with him, that's why I quit trying to raise pups and bought one dog and traded for the other. I now have 2 dogs that suit me very well, I like the way they hunt and my strike dog is getting better every year. I paid $200 for one outright, traded a dog and $200 boot for the other.....I'm a happy man.

I avg 202 per year feeding diamond and I dont see that as persay an expense that is just upkeep u don't add that to the price of a pickup for changing the oil etc when u sale. And the thing
that ticks me off is the dog trader tring to make a quick buck.  They show a dog a pig and say it is well started etc but they have not put 5 cents of effort into a dog. That is what my question is about.  Time and effort into a good dog is worth money yes I understand that and I am not looking for more dogs but like looking at the ones that are for sale so I know it should not bother me but guess see the hog hunting world as a per say family that one should not take advantage of another.

my sister just had a litter of yorkies she has sold for 800. a piece who the hell would pay that kind of money for a worthless dog like that kind of puts paying 1500 for a jam up strike dog in perspective, ive personally never bought a dog just been keeping pups off the first dogs i started with 15 years ago they are nothing great but there are lots of hogs around here and we always catch them
