I have hunted plenty of times without a lead in bulldog as a catch dog. But when I have hunted with straight curs, there has always been a catch dog in the bunch, the catch dog just happened to be a cur. Biggest hog I have ever caught was shut down/ caught with 3 cur dogs, not a bulldog in sight.

Any time I hunt horseback, I only run curs. My bulldogs don't have the leg/lungs to hang with the horses, and there is not enough room in the saddle for my big butt and a bulldog Grin

It's hard to find curs that can catch the big ones, yet last a long time.  I'd like to someday have all my dogs hunt like that, smart about when to be rough.  The pack I have right now will catch without the bulldog when I tell them to.  However...they really don't have the a$$ to anchor a really big one though, and they're too good at finding for me to ask them do it.... especially when I have a bulldog that can take the heat off of them.... allowing them to hunt the next day.

Like I said, I'm working towards eventually not needing a CD, but I'll probably always carry one just in case.

tanner

to answer your question. i never did use bull dogs. i ran curs and they would bay and i would shoot the hog. i found i killed bigger hogs and the dogs did not get cut. they would catch small hogs and bayed the others.

Well i started off without a catch dog because my cur dogs are gritty and will catch, my cur dogs are all an average 60 pounds, some more some less. But then a friend gave us a dog he didnt want anymore that was around a year, he was a just a yard dog but when we took him hunting for the first time we found out he was a hog catchin machine, not sure what kinda bulldog cross he is but he is 80 pounds, long legs, and can keep up with the curs so we let him run, we never lead him in.
