My water tubes get green and alot of slim real quick. Does anybody have any tips on what I can do to stop or slow it down? Is there anything I can put in the water? I have to haul water so its hard to give new water everyday.

Anything white grows slime fast. Try a dark color i use dark green or dark yellow buckets they dont grow slime hardley at all.

The bleach works and so does apple cider vinagar dogs kinda look at ya funnu when they take a drink after the vinegar is added but they get used to it quick

I use black buckets, and upon a closer inspection they have the green slime you just can't see it against the dark color. I added some air (similar to a fishtank) and have excellent results, no slime, water stays fresh longer, and no bugs!

rinsing the slime does not work. It is algae and it grows fast. Clean the tubs the best you can, I mean real clean and then clean them with bleach to kill what you can't see. If you are hauling the water do the same to what you carry the water in. Anything that gets light. Algae needs light to grow. You can clean on a regular basis with Listerine it will keep it under control and is safer than bleach. Make sure you rinse the bleach out and let it dry before putting drinking water in it. Bleach is not good for dogs but it kills algae fast. But if there is any algae left it will come back fast.

tha main thing i do is keep the buckets out of direct light but i still give fresh water at least every other day.

I actually let the seaweed grow in my water bowls!  There is a "supplement" they make down the hill from my house that alot of poeple swear by helps with pain and a few other health ailments so I got the idea to give it a try on my dogs. I refill every bowl with fresh water everyday or at least every other day until I can see the build up and then I take the hose and blast it all off and refill the bowl. I do this for about 3 months and then add some apple cider vinegar to a bowl of fresh water and after a day or 2 the bowl is back to clean and I start the process over again! I have been doing this for quite a while and although I don't see any miraculous observations I have gotten into a routine of doing it and the dogs don't seem to mind. |

purebreed...... To add air I use an aquarium pump and tubing, one main line and t's that lead off to the buckets. They go over the top of the kennels straight down to the kennels.

Been using the same set of galvanized buckets for over 3 years now. Never have an algae problem, although i give fresh water every day. Then only thing I have noticed is a few of my buckets eventually started leaking a little. But that doesnt really bother me since i refill every day. If they start to leak too bad I will just clip that one on the fence for a feed bucket and buy another. Plus they cant chew em up, I think i got them at Lowes or Home Depot.

I use a 1 inch chlorine tablet (like u put in a swimming pool) cut in 1/4's and the dogs do fine and no algea ever. it smells like city water.

I like the chlorine idea. That is how they treat our water from the tap. I use bleach right now. The rougher the surface of the bucket the easier the stuff will grow in it. I have tried all colors. I use to use metal but when it got below 32 last year all of them split so I have all plastic now.

add vinegar 1 tablespoon per gallon and change out the water every 3 or 4 days during the summer. Keep the water out of direct sun light as much as possible. This will help with skeeter larva and help keep the PH of the water high enough to help slow down algae growth.

Go to Tractor Supply and look in the Horse & Cattle small feed trough section and by the automatic waters there should small burlap bag that is for water troughs to help control algea. It does nt hurt horse, cattle or dogs and will sink to hte bottom of the bucket. May cost ya around 5 bucks.
