Talk about a close call!!  Shocked Today, my dog Joe got more out of his cut vest than I ever thought he would. It wasn't a hog he needed to worry about, it was this rattlesnake. Joe was too inquisitive and the snake tagged him right in the chest. If it weren't for the vest, he would be a dead dog right now. All we had with us as far as guns were 12 gauges loaded with slugs so when I shot him, it didn't leave much left for show. This is whats left of him. It was a western diamondback... and no it's not on the endangered list, that's the eastern diamondback. The easiest way to tell is the black ring(s) at the tail, signifying the western species. He only had about 5 rattles and a button but he made plenty of racket with it.

Way too close for me. One less snake to worry about.

I know what you mean but that booger wasn't all that small... of course, he wasn't pushing 6 feet either. I shot him twice... the first shot hit him right about in the middle which left his front end still working fine. We decided to shoot him again but this time in the head. Well... with a slug hitting directly in the head and about a foot and a half of his body straight in line with the bullet, a lot of the top half got obliterated. What's left of him is still over 3 foot. His body was bigger around than my wrist for the most part and I'm no little fellow.  Grin Either way, I'm glad it ended the way it did.  Smiley

Glad he didn't get your dog. Snakes look so much better dead.

I have wondered if a good vest would stop a snakes fangs, now I know. Glad your dog was alright.

This thread would be good advertisin for the vest dealers, all the coon hunters will want one now, but would be a snake vest instead of cut vest Grin

This reminds me we had a closer call this weekend too.  My buddies girlfriend was hunting with us and climbed over a branch and then one of us was going to do the same thing when we saw the snake.  It was a copper head that was laying right on that branch.  She had just straddled that a second earlier too Shocked....She got really lucky and so did we that we saw it and did not try our luck a second time.

my dog zeke got bit on the nose last week by a 3 foot cotton mouth.  I shot the snake with my glock .40 and ole zeke swole up pretty big and pulled through just fine. I have always heard that cotton mouths are just as bad as rattlesnakes??? I am just glad zeke was ok. I am a firm believer that a good snake is a dead one.

Ran across this picture yesterday of a snake Mike and I killed last year just down the road from LionandBoarhunter.

Funny thing about it, is that the ranch manager had just told us he never sees any snakes out there. Grin Not sure how tall a Shiner bottle is, but you could lay 7 Shiner's end to end. I would guess that puts him awful close to 6 feet.
