How would you go about training a hood dog? I've never hunted with one but I assume they ride on the hood till they wind a hog and then bail off.

Well i don't know if it is going to work but here is what i have been doing. I got my pups at six weeks old and from that time on i would put them up on the hood and on top of the cab of the truck and just pet and play around with them so they would get comfortable being up there. After that i would drive around my property with them up there slowly so they would get the hang of balancing while going over some of the tererain. Now that they are older the only time the really come out of the kennel is to go out and excercise and i am starting to start them on winding. My partners daddy has got some pretty jam up rig dogs and we are going to start making trips up to Port Lavaca so the pups can watch the big dogs wind and bail off. I imagine this same procedure would work for an older dog also. nothin to loose by trying.

when a dog does that we call it ute finding. just drive em round where ur hunting on the back of the ute in the box then when they start to whimper or sratch hard on the cage let em loose

My old dog used to hood real well, and my hollywood dog is getting better at it. i just put them on the hood and drove through areas I thought there should be hogs. They both just took to it, no training to speak of. You might tie a hog out somewhere and drive by, getting closer each time until the dog bails off...

ive got one that if in the box she opens up but if loose on the truck she bail off i think its just about gettin em to know wat pigs smeel like , and lots of road huntin

my red dog winds real good and i like the idea of riding around in the truck for a change instead of walking or riding the four wheeler. gonna give it a shot tommorw and see what she does. thanks for the tips...
