You said you went to gritty dogs and that hasn't worked.  What were you running before?  If gritty/rough isn't getting it done, try going the opposite direction...loose dogs.  Its amazing how hogs started to bay up for us this summer when we went from 4-5 dogs to 2-3 loose dogs.  The hog kinda thinks he's winning when 2-3 dogs are barking at him but won't get close enough to bite.  Put one dog in the mix that gets up on him and tries to pull hair.....its off the races.  It might not work in some situtations but its worth a try.

We're having the same trouble. We found that running only one loose bay dog tends to do best. We've tried a pack of ten dogs together, running catch dogs, nothing seemed to work. Everytime one dog would bay, the hog would stay. As soon as another dog got there, the hog was gone and never looked back. Started running one dog, and lead in catch dog. Have to be quite and don't spook the hog on your way in. If the catchdog misses, kiss the hog goodbye. Don't know if this will work for you, but worth a try.

It deffinately seems that we get outrun more in the summer time. Im not sure if it is because the dogs cant deal with the heat as well or if it is because there is so much more undergrowth in the summer. I can't wait for it to cool back down. Our dogs seem to do much better in the cooler months, JMO.

Cull Buck makes a great point, when the ruff dogs are busting bays go to a couple of stand-off kind of dogs and you might see a difference

Been being out run a bunch this summer. I don't think their is a right answer for that question. I think the closest thing to the right answer is run dogs that don't do nothing but catch no bark at all. When they see a hog they catch. I think I am fixin to get me a couple.

I believe it depends on the type of hogs your puttin your dogs on but i dont think there is a right or wrong answer to this either.I have hunted with both rough and loose baying dogs and here lately ive caught more with loose bayin dogs on a running hog place which is totally weird. So try both. If its a small pig they should catch it no matter what anyways. So use your best judgement on it.

It's always beter to use 1 or 2 clean baydogs that wont touch a hog unless the hog starts to run. But when everything is so growed up in the summer an spring it's a must. And have two good legie catch dogs that dont miss and get close as you can before you cut them loose.

Like Noah said, there is two kinds of gritty... if a dog is gonna act gritty he better go head and latch on and stay on, if not this new breed of hogs we dealin with aint gonna put up with gettin hit while hes tryin to bay, its off to the races for him.  Dont feel like you are the only one tryin to figure this puzzle out though, its tons of us tryin to find a group of dogs that will let us catch EVERY hog we get on... And if it makes you feel better, I aint found it yet.. But I have both type of dogs and if I come up on the rite hogs and I have the rite dogs that day, well... I just luck up. Wink

THIS IS JUST MY OPINION.....THE WAY I HAVE SEEN IT OVER THE YEARS IS.....IF YOU ARE GOING TO RUN GRITTY DOGS YOU NEED TO RUN ALL GRITTY AND A FEW OF THEM(5 OR MORE). I PERSONALY RUN LOOSE DOGS AND I HAVE RUNNING CATCH DOGS WITH LONG LEGS...RIDGEBACK AND A CAT...SO WHEN YOUR DOGS BAY(AND DONT TRY TO PUT TOO MUCH MOUTH ON THEM THEY WILL KINDA PUT UP A LIL FIGHT (INSTEAD OF RUN) THEN IT ONLY TAKES THE HOG PUASEING FOR YOUR CATCH TO BE THERE(BECUASE THEY ARE ALREADY ON THE GROUND) BUT THEN AGAIN OUR DOGS YIP ALITTLE (IF THE HOG BREAKS) AND IT HELPS THE CATCHDOGS STICK WITH THEM....WE HAD A GRITTY LIL DOG IN OUR PACK ONCE AND SHE WAS THE ONLY ONE THAT WOULD JUMP IN AND TRY TO PUT MOUTH ON(ALOT OF MOUTH) WELL SHE WASNT VERY BIG AND COULDNT HOLD HER OWN AND OUR OTHER DOGS WERENT GOING TO JUMP IN TILL THE CATCH GOT THERE.....EVERY TIME WE WENT OUT WITH HER ON THE GROUND THE HOGS WOULD BREAK BEFORE THE CATCH GOT THERE. SO WE SOLD HER TO A GUY THAT RUNS ALL GRITTY DOGS AND HE LOVED HER. AND OUR DOGS DO JUST FINE  NOW.....ITS BEEN A LIL WHILE SINCE WE GOT OUTRAN BUT IT HAPPENS TO EVERYONE SOMETIME OR ANOTHER....GOOD LUCK AND HOPE ALL THE INFO EVERYONE IS GIVING HELPS!

I have got a female plott that would do good then, she got whooped up pretty good twice last year by a bear (12 months old) and wont get within 20 ft of boar or bear but will stick all day, just waaaaay back.  LOL!!!   personaly i dont like it at all, and she is currently on the cull list, as soon as i find a replacement.
