Here's the problem. We've got 2 BMC's that are good start dogs, but they will bark on a hot trail. Our younger dogs don't bark on trail. For the past couple of months we have been leaving the 2 bmcs at home because we want the younger dogs to be silent on trail. We also haven't been catching as many hogs.
So in you guys experience will a silent dog become open mouthed if hunted with dogs that are opened mouthed?

No,if he turns out open he woulda anyhow, not cause the others are. I have never had a silent dog turn open from hunting with open dogs.

i have to run the ecollar on sue, she always starts out open until zzzzzap then she doesnt make a peep until she sees a porker. my young pup cowgirl will start doing the same thing that sue does if i forget the ecollar. i think it is monkey see monkey do.

if sue aint around its a silent hunt.. i wish i could break her of it. she stops barking after about 3-4 minutes but it sure gets loud when the tail gate drops.

I have !  I have seen silent dogs run with some open mouth dogs and have seen it rubbed off more than a few times on the silent dogs they may not have turned out completly opened but it sure as hell rubbed off on the silent dogs and seen some become yippy !  I will not run one of my dogs with a open mouthed track trailing dog .

I have hunted with guys who say there dogs are silent but when they get with a dog that can flat run then they will start barking on track! In a race only not the trail!!

Yea but if they are working it's good! when a dog is pushing another dog hard and fast the hog has to bay!!It don't bother me for a dog to sqeak alittle on track!!Now a dog that babbles ain't worth a crap!!

Here's my experience with this silent/open thing. I have 2 cur dogs, one that is totally silent unless she's looking at a hog. My best dog is silent unless the track is super hot, then she may yip just a bit, but 95% of the time she doesn't say a word until she sees the hog. Now I hunt these dogs with a pack of hounds that are open on track.....most are Plotts and I've hunted my dogs with them for over 2 years and it hasn't affected either of my dogs one bit, they're right now just like they were when I started hunting them with the open hounds.....for what it's worth, that's what I've observed myself.

I guess it depends on the dog from my experience. I hunt mostly open mouth dogs plotts and English hounds. I have a 7/8 cat and 1/8 pit that is silent and has been packed to these hounds from a pup on. i also have a 3/4 plott 1/4 july that has been run his whole life with open mouth dogs and when he barks you can cut the catch dog loose.

Me I like the open mouth. I like the trailin ability, stanima, speed, and the roar when they bay. Thats just me I have culled dogs for not Barking enough Wink

But I like any dog long as it gets the job done! Smiley

Well I don't think we will be running these dogs again, after hearing you guys responses.
Anyone want two BMCs that are good start dogs but will bark on a hot trail? They might be up for sale here pretty soon.

Up until last month i ran a WIDE OPEN dog with nothing but silent pups and they never picked it up it actually helped me a lot trainin the pups cause then they could run the track with him and when they started running it faster i traded him off ... i dont mind  an open dog if he/she doesn't lie
