I'm ex-military and am wondering if any of you folks out there that are ex-military have used your GI bill for Taxidermy  ? I'm lookin into getting into taxidermy and would like to know if they will cover it under the GI bill. Any info into this will help. Thanks. |

Yeah, I've tried to contact the VA on stuff for stuff kinda like this before but I alway seem to get some bonehead that has no idea what I'm wanting and then they never follow up with it.

Im not ex-military, Im in Iraq right now...Ill ask a couple of guys that recruited in our unit, they are pretty knowledgeable on all that since they go through all them schools...Is this a do it yourself Taxidermy course at home or you actually attending school somewhere...I think the only problem would be if its accredited and whether they acknowledge it as a legitimate college...You might have to argue and fight with them a couple weeks but it'd be worth it...Ill ask though and get back to you.

BA-IV it's an attend type school. I've been out going on five years now and dont want to lose my GI bill benefits. Heck I paid for them and served so I need to use them.
Thanks for lookin into it for me. And being your in the sandbox right now, know that I've been there and my prayers are with you. Take care and keep me posted on how things are going over there. Let me know when you get back stateside. I'll be glad to take you on a hunt here in the Texas hill country.

Oh, by the way. I was home ported in Pascagoula, MS. So LA aint that far away.

I appreciate man and it might take a couple of days but ill find out...I just got off my two weeks R & R...I had twins December 30 and left 5 days later and I got to see them for the first time in 7 months and saying goodbye to them a second time was probably the hardest thing I've ever done...But the sacrifice is worth it when you look back...Its nice to know people who served or are serving and have been through it. I know it's a pain in the azz, but I always go the face to face route...that way I can always talk to someone higher in the food chain. |

you have 10yrs to use ur gibill ater ur out. as far as taxidermy school, if the school is in the list of approved universities,trade schools or colleges then yes the old bill will pay for it. dont try that with this new post 9/11 bill, it seems u can get a degree in basket weaving and it is covered but dont try to get a tradeschooll degree, the va wont pay for it. if u can tell me if there are any major colleges or universities that offer taxidermy i will look at the va site and see if those places are on the approved list and let u know and i will post the link for other to do ck into also. oh ps. we aint ex-mil, we are former mil unless u got kicked out with below a general discharge.   |

just to inform any of FORMER military with a disability rating of 60% or greater, you can get a supercombo huntin and fishin liscence for FREE and any active duty can get the same for FREE. i have mentioned it before on another thread but since we are on the topic of military i thought i would share that with yaw. even though is says 60% a guy i know has 30 or 40% and he didnt have to pay for his, dependin on the mood of the clerck sellin the liscence at the time.

Pay for a hunting license? My truck registration is about $5 a year. If you have Disabled Vet plates then the toll road is free in Harris and at least one other county. The State of Texas cares for its Vets. I forget what disability rating you need for the plates but it is easy to find. For Vets that gave of their self Texas gives a little back. Thanks Texas!

For disabled vet plates in Texas;
"You may apply for Disabled Veteran license plates for your car, light truck or motorcycle if you are certified by the Veteran Administration to have a 50 percent service-related disability, or 40 percent due to amputation of a lower extremity. An annual $3 fee is collected for the first set of plates. There is no fee to apply for the second set of plates, but you are required to pay the regular registration fee [pdf, 1 page, 943kb] and other applicable fees."

Your Admissions person or Financial Aid person should be able to tell you whether or not the GI bill has been used in their situation before. My husband went to a trade school after he got out of the military & the GI Bill paid for most of it, but not all of it. One of your best sources would be the school. If they're accredited in their trade & handle financial aid then they should be familiar with what all needs to be done to use your GI Bill for the classes. |

the OLD GI BILL will pay for trade schools, but as of right now the post 9-11 gi bill WONT pay for trade schools, even from an accredited school. i wanted to take welding for 2yrs at A&M satilite school in texarkana tx and the vetrens admin office told me that the va wouldnt pay for it, didnt believe her so i calld the va and they told me that NO, under the post 9-11 bill, trade schools are not covered but (underwater basket weaving is covered) . the senate and congress is tryin to push a bill through to ammend the 9-11 bill to where things like trade schools and not having to take 9-12hrs of class for the housing stipen but only taking 6hrs as mentioned when the 9-11 bill was intorduced. now as far as the individual school, if they have a veterans admin office, talk the people there and they should be able to tell whether or not taxidermy is covered under the old gi bill, it should since it is a trade type class but it also depends on if the class is classified as a 2yr or 4yr class schedule. if it not under either 1 no matter how long the class is, it will not be covered. i got a friend who does taxidermy and if i can get ahold of him i will ask him what it cost him for his class, he teaches taxidermy on the side for extra money. |

No biggy. being out 4yrs, a lot can change with this current government and it changes fast. now dependin on what gi bill folks hav depends on what schoolin is covered. the best place to find what is covered is through the va's website under education. |
