Garmin Hand Held ( Pics Added ) 08-07-10

  I was hunting the other day and caught a hog in the Bayou . After wadding in about chest deep and catching the pig i got back up on the bank and the curs were rolled out. I reached for my Garmin Hand Held unit and i guess i forgot to zip the pouch shut on my belt. Well I lost it in the Bayou.  SO now i am in the market for another handheld unit if anyone of yall have one that you want to get rid of let me know.  I NEED one BAD .


No  I didnt loose my camera , YET ! !  even though I have dropped a few , or gotten them wet and broken them. I had it with me on this hunt and did try and take a few pictures but was by myself standing in chest deep water right at the break of day and they didnt turn out very good. Trying to leg the hog, watch for Gators, and take pictures all at the same time.  LOL But heres a few for ya anyway .  Oh and not to meantion that I didnt think about it or even realize it untill the excitement was over with that I was wearing a short sleeve shirt and those darn Cat Tails will cut the crap out of ya.

That sucks Marvin. One time I lost my garmin hand held and my tri-tronics trashbreaker... luckily I was able to back track and find them.

I heard that waaaay back in the day like 5 years ago people used to catch hogs without a garmin.

I don't think I believe them though

I know we were hunting this morning and it got hot aroung noon Ike was bayed and would only bark every now and then!!We were on the edge of a field and could not hear him at all at 140 yards! I told Crystal how many times years ago did we just drive off and leave them dogs who worked so hard for us!!We were able to get to him only becuae of the system!!

seems like it gives them dogs alot more confidense , in that they know you are coming eventually.   i noticed that back when tracking systems first came out years ago

I think tracking systems are good, but people tend to rely on them much.
Especially people who came into hunting with a garmin. They are lost if they don't have it, glued to the screen constantly having to keep as close to the dogs as they can. Pretty much just follow them around the woods.
Actually it kind of annoys me to where i won't hunt with a few certain people.

yeh i know what your saying,   i like to listen to my dogs but i do most of my hunting horseback,  shure is nice on the wheelers when your dogs are going the other way..

I watch the screen plenty, but I don't worry about keeping up with the dogs. If they are a mile or so out, then I might start trailing them a bit.  The other night, we just parked on a high spot and dropped the dogs. They hunted in several directions about 900 yards. Once they had pretty much covered the area, we loaded up and hit another area.  It was nice to see that the dogs had covered an area, and we were able to save the dogs a bit, by loading them up and taking them to a different area to try. With radio, I would have had the system out several times listening to the beeps.

I like having the Garmin as a tool. Just the other night, I was able to see that I had a young dog leading an older dog by about 50 yards on several occasions. Without watching the garmin, I would have just assumed that the young dog was following.

Well you can believe em .  I was one of em . I hunted for years even without any type of tracking system. Then finally got up enough money to buy a Wildlife System and used it for several years and just in the last 1 1/2 years have I had the Garmin .   It is a Luxuary to have.

I know what you mean about people being glued to the screen .  I use Mine more as a tool and Like Mike said on ly move up closer to the dogs if they are bayed or getting out of range .   And thats what happened to me the other day. When they broke they left the country and I didnt have a clue as to which way they went . So I was sitting there with my thumb up my butt waiting on dogs for over 2 hours when it might have been another caught hog.  

Any way this aint a debate , I just need another Handheld Unit .

How many Garmin Products have you left in those bayous? I may need to bring my underwater metal detector down there tonight. Get some extra equipment! Lol! I left a pair of costas sunglasses in the bayou last week myself.

Put it this way Joey. If someone found everyrhing i have lost they would have a complete system . .

That's why you see me wearing overalls all the time. I put the garmin strap through my right overall strap and let it rest in right chest pocket and do the same with waterproof camera on leftside. The first time I lost it I found it. The second time I didn't wear it on my overalls I never found it again.

Bass Pro by my kennels carrys all the garmin stuff. It's a little more expensive but if something doesn't work after a while you just put it in the box and exchange it.

sfboarbuster Don't take it so personally. Not sure if you are serious or not but of all the reasons not to hunt with someone thats a pretty silly one... If I had to guess I'd say majority of people are more used to interpreting visual stimuli compared to audio stimuli. So whats the difference if your looking at a screen or just being real quiet and listening with your eyes closed. The point is your trying to figure out where your dogs are or what they are doing. I would rather see a picture and a map than listen to a beep beep beep or listen and try to hear a dog bark every 5 mins. Hell sometimes its better cause you can't hear a bay at the bottom of a creek but you know when that Garmin says treed and all the dogs are in the same spot and aint moving that its a bay!! Its so great I bet even a deaf person could hunt efficiently with one, how could you knock it!
