I have had a couple of folks ask if I had any stories to tell so here is one. Use to help an man back in the early 80s that ran about 300 head of mama cows on 3000 acres of salt grass. On Sunday mornings ( when it was not too hot) we would load the horses and a couple of dogs and check cows and catch a pig if we could. This particular morning his son-in- law and grandson went with us.Got to the cow pens and turned lose. After about 20 minutes the dogs opened up and the race was on. They headed straight for the marsh and a big switch cane thicket.( I think Mike and Chris can tell you about some of the cane thickets down here).

The dogs where baying solidand I told the group that I would try to ride in and try to get to the dogs.I had made it up to about 30 yards of where they where bayed up.Had to get off my horse and crawl on hands and knees thru hog trails to get to them. I could hear them not more than 5ft way but could not see them. So I pushed thru the cane and there they where. It was a sow about 260 and they had about a 20ft area knocked down.

As I was trying to get a shot at the sow one of the dogs moved right in front of me.He never knew I was  there. He had all his attention on the sow.So I just pocked him in the bu!! With the barrel of my pistal to get him to move. I guess he thought a pig had snicked up on him because he yelled like I was taking away his man hood.

Well I shot the sow and now I had to get her out of there.Got the sow close enought to my horse to get my rope on it and started to drag her out.The cane and vines where so thick the sow got tangled up in it and the mare I was riding went to lungin.Well she turned over backwads on top of me. Now I was in a bind.I had the mares head pulled up into my chest so she could not get up.She was laying on my left leg,had rope all tangled up on me. All I could do was call for help. They thought a hog had gotten me down and was doing a number on me. When they saw what was going on they all had a good laff on me.

I guess I should not have pocked that dog in the bu!!.

Once you get a 3/8 nylon rope really tight and when the horses feet come off the ground it acts like a rubber band and things kinda go south in a hurry.

LOL I dont feel bad about it. Back in them days I was 10ft tall and bullet prof. The only really bad thing that came out off the hold deal was that that mare would go to bucking every time you try to swing a rope off her after that. The old man that own her traied her off for 3 bred heifers. But she was as good as they came at cutting pairs in the pasture.

I sure got a good laugh out of that story Mr. Ronnie but I think that mare would have turned over backwards even if you didnt poke that dog in the butt! LMAO!

Where did you have that pistol when you turned over? I ask because I had a horse flip over on me a few years ago and I had my Leatherman Wave in my pants pocket. I had a perfect bruise of that thing on my leg for weeks! lol. If your pistol was in the right spot then I bet you walked funny for a while!
