Got a dog that has a bloated stomach. At first I thought he just ate way too much. I have him kenneled with another dog, with a self feeder in the kennel. This dog will sit and eat and eat to not let the other one eat. I figured he would have passed it by now, but he hasnt. He tried to have a bowel movement yesterday, but it looked like just a little bit of mucous. He has been like this for 3 days already. Gonna take him to the vet in the morning, anyone have any ideas what it might be or home remedies.

Had an old bulldog that did the same thing the vet said to give him stool softener and a suppository. Feed him can dog food it is digested easier n give him plenty of water. It help move the stool through n clean him out if it is just constapation. However if there is a blockage from something he ate it may or may not pass through in my case it did not and the dog begain to drop weight at a very rapid pace and had to be sent to the hunting grounds above. I would recommend a trip to the vet to get him checked out if the bloat doesent subside in the next couple days.

If its a blockage it could kill him. Watch for 'em to start "hunching up".

X2 We had a dog that looked bloated here about a year ago. Took him to the vet after giving him mineral oil with no luck and found out he had Heart worms and had fluid building up in his gut. We gave him a series of Chemo treatments to try to cure it with no luck, and finally decided to just let him be retired here at the house. The vet didn't give him a very long time to live, but i guess he was wrong, the dog is still alive to this day. He is a male dog that looks pregnant. He is one of the best find dogs we got, and good thing we decided to bree him to a gyp or our before we found out about his prognosis. Hope your dog gets better! Good Luck!

I didnt have any luck with the mineral oil or stool softner. I flet his stomach and he has a fluid build up. If it is because of heart failure would it have set on so fast? Definitely gonna get him to the vet tomorrow. Anyone know the vet in George West? The vet where I live is all abut the $ sign, and I'm not to confident in them

I lost a dog years ago to a twisted stomach. Was bloated. Read up on it and supposedly had something to do with feeding them too close to exercize or hunting activity. Vet probably a good idea.

Is the dogs gums and eyes jaundice(sp?) I had a female that was bloated bad, started losing weight everywhere except her belly because of the fluid buildup but had to put her down, she had liver and kidney failure.

This is all that the vet said would happen to our dog eventually. He now looks the same but just with a big belly. I think the dog will out live me and im 29. I gave our dogs frech water today and he was running and jumping around. He's definately a fighter! Good luck to ya brother!

This usually happens to large big chested dogs like certain cur strains, great danes, rotts, etc. Twisted stomach is called bloat and will kill a dog. The vet can operate but if the dog has it once it will be prone to get it again. Just like the quote says, do not feed the dog right before hard excercise/hunting or right after. It won't hurt to skip a feeding to prevent bloat.
