Ok so here goes,  Guy ive always hunted with always had the kit, and to be honest has forgotten more about doctoring dogs than ill ever know.  He quit running dogs and moved, so here i am with a rough dog, no kit and no idea what to put in it.  Ive seen and held dogs for alot of his work but gotta admit im kinda new at it.  ive lanced hematomas give my dogs their own shots and pennicilin, not sqeemish and have a general idea on what to do to at least get one to the vet if need be, heres my shopping list thus far,

Stapple gun, im thinking of getting a reusable.  any thoughts?
Gauze, surgical thread and a needle (not real sure if i need this with a staple gun)
Quick clot, saliene, and a couple old rags..

Thats where i run outta ideas  Embarrassed..  help is appreciated..

having both the staple gun and staples and the sutures are both good ideas incase u need to sew up the inside. i also pack iv bag/s and the tubing and a tournequet. evrything u listd off is a good start and should surfice in most cases. i carry everything i would need to treat a battlefeild wound and apply those items and knowledge to help treat dogs.

add dex /syringe and a pair of hemostats so you can push the needle through if your using a suture,i tried it by hand near impossible on a dogs hide.a spray bottle to blast out debris from wounds can be made from a bottle of water just cut a small hole in the cap and squeeze bottle.

What I usually do is always carry a black sock with me,, i cut a hole out of the end of it and place it over the dogs head and cover the dogs eyes while I work on them.. It has always seemed to calm down the dogs and then they will be still while you are doing what you have to do,,, Also if you can get your hands on some Zylocain in the bottles,, once you shoot them up with that it deadens the nerve endings and they dont feel nothin.. Hope that helps

I have a bag with the following:

- Tampons "Heavy"
- Hemostats
- Surgical Scissors
- Betadine (sp)
- Gauze Pads
- Cat Gut
- Staples
- Scalpels
- Staple puller
- Lg Syringe
- "room temp" bottled waters/saline
- Rymadil
- Lydocaine spray

There isnt  much that you cannot stop with a tampon and a staple gun as far as punctures go but I wouldnt leave them in more than 24 hours with out changing or just taking out and restapling after you clean it.

I have found it is hard to keep a clean shirt in the truck but if you can get a long sleeve t-shirt and keep it clean it is very helpful in many situations, especially stomach wounds that require rides to the vet.

IMO the blood clot is a waste, I have never personally had any luck - the best advice I was ever given was to plug the hole ASAP and apply as much pressure as possible.  The only luck I have ever had with it was on small cuts that didnt amount to much in the first place.

The way I do it ,, is just simply inject the zylocain in the area where you want to staple kind of like you are injecting a piece of meat that you are seasoning,, kind of go at it all directions and it dont have to be deep because most nerve endings are shallow.. Kind of like going to a dentist,, it really dont matter to me how much he uses just as long as I dont feel it, Ha laugh

Yep lol that is right ... they do just what they are made to do  Wink just leave the string hangin out so you can remove it the next day - it is MUCH easier than fishing nasty gauze out!

I learned that trick from my uncle, I never really thought about it and I cannot post what he said but I am sure you can fill in the blanks lol - My mom and other family members said that there was someone that would cut stud horses on Lykes Brothers/Brighton and pack him full of Kotex ... when they fell out he was good to go!  Shocked

I drove an hour to Clewiston last year just to take out some gauze that I had put in my brother in law's dog because he didnt have the stomache to do it and believe me it was already rank after a day and a half, plus it was hard to fish out because I had to pack it so tight to get it to hold...I repacked it with good ole Tampax for another day just to be sure it held and he had no complaints with taking it out.

Where can you get the Zylocain from?

with the dosage of zylocane or laticane, use urself as a testing stand and start with a couple ccs' and see how long it take to go numb and increase the dosage for a longer period of time. when i had to sew myself up 1 time, i used 5cc and it was pleanty and lasted a couple hrs b4 i got the full feeling back. and as for the tampons, we used to take them out on patrol when we outside the wire in iraq and kept a box in the sound proofing of the helicopter we were flying in just incase we had to PL from enemy fire, thank goodness we never had to, we just came back to the fob with an rpg stuck in the fusalage, again thank goodness it didnt detonate. another good thing to use if u cant get ur hands on a suture kit, is 10-12lb monofelament fishing line and a needle that the line will thread through and put a bend in it to help with exit angle from the skin. i tote a combat life saver bag when i go hunting, i will inventory it and see what all is in it and post if anything other than what others and kyself have stated earlier.
