For some time now I have not been pleased w/ my packs performance. I used to have good dogs but it seems as if my quality has slipped a bit. A lot of it due to me messing with dogs I shouldnt have bothered with in the first place.
While hunting with a good friend the other day that has always had better than average dogs, we got into a discussion about mine. He basicly looked at me and said, no offense but you dont have number 2. LOL He told me what I already knew which was that I spend way to much time and effort training and hunting to have no better than I do.
I did a lot of thinking on the subject and my dogs and decided to start over. I figured there was no need in BSing around so I got rid of everything except one grown dog (who is walking a fine line) and one pup (who is off of the caliber of dog I need). I went and picked up a Kemmer pup that is out of some outstanding dogs that I know well, verry smart, good noses, lots of drive. I also picked up a bulldog pup out of one of the best catch dogs I have ever known.
So I have a hard row to hoe coming up w/ pups but I think I will be better off w/ what I have now over what I let go.

sometimes that is what it takes.. But just find a good line of dogs and start with the pups such as u are doing,,,, Good Luck

Good luck. I just did about the same thing. I had bay dogs that would find hogs, but sometimes they found critters other than hogs, sometimes they barked trail, I finally got tired of telling myself they were better than they really were... Gave some away, sold some others, and started over fresh in the bay dog department. I did not buy puppies, rather I bought a couple of good solid started dogs, they may not be superstars, but the potential is there.

starting over is no fun. it gets frustrating. ive only been running dogs for about a year and a half, and about a month ago i got rid of my last original dog.
ive gotten rid of some pretty decent dogs, but they were not EXACTLY what i want. im not even sure what it is that i want, but i'll know when i get it. i take a little flack for going through so many dogs, but one day i will have my "dream pack". you will never have exceptional dogs if you settle for average dogs. you've got to be willing to cut your losses and keep looking, right?
