A couple of days ago we caught about 10 50 to 60lb hogs in one of my traps.  I pulled out a couple and the last two days Ive been staging hunts for my younger dogs.  Ive never done this before and a couple of my pups have never seen a hog.  Here is my question,  why didnt they bark?  LOL Cheesy  Not that they didnt do anything  they all just caught and wouldnt let go.  My hound let out a bawl when he found one of the hogs but then he caught. I tried staging hunts with different dogs but with the same results each time.   My pups are between 6 months and 9 or 10 months old and  I realize they are still young but was wondering if with time or maybe a bigger hog they would back up and bay. Never really thought these dogs were that gritty but they turned into different dogs when they saw a hog. The youngest is a lacy/dogo and I expected it out of him but not really the others.    Any advice will be appreciated.    Thanks.

Get ya a bigger pig, maybe 80lbs with some attitude. They'll back up and bay being that young.

Well, first off you need to be thankful that they caught instead of just smelling a hog and then wandering off... Smiley

Sounds like you have the makings of some good hog dogs.

You need a bigger hog so the pups can learn to respect a hog otherwise they will get cut up bad or killed when they finally meet up with a big bad boar in the woods.

Also a bigger hog would get the pups to baying. Leave the Dogo out for now because he will encourage the other pups to catch.

If you were working one dog at a time you need a bigger more agressive pig. If you were working several try cutting back to one at a time that might help.  I worked a young bulldog and a 8 month old cur today. One at a time, for cur this was the first time she had ever seen a hog.  She bayed her butt off and never put a tooth on the hog(65lb salty sow) worked her like a champ.  The young bull dog on the other hand never said a word and ripped that ole sow a new one.  Have fun with you pups.  Sounds like you may have a pretty rough crew!

if your using them all at once. All its takes is one dog to get ruff and catch then all the dogs will catch or at least that is what mine do. You said you have a dogo cross if he catches do you still want all the others to bay or catch? when they here the pig squeal they get excited then all cacth.

i take a 10 to 20 pig my son and some budys will drag it 80 to 100 yrds and put it in a 3x3x3 cage . then we turn the pups out and road them , we use a older pup that will pick up a track . wen we cross the track we watch and see wat pups do wen older pup goes and bays they will go to him they cant catch cause hes in a cage standing up moving around. we let bay for a while and then turn lose. we work 2 to 3 pups this works for us pretty good. oh put wheels on the cage easy to move
