Me and a couple of buddies hit the woods tuesday afternoon for a deer hunt with bows.  About 7:30 p.m. my buddy(CJ) texted me and said he put a good hog down with his crossbow.  Well I got down and headed over there to his stand to help he and Tommy look for the hog. We followed the blood trail into a thicket, at dark with only a bow and two flash lights.  Needless to say it didnt take long to find it and it was still alive and chased us out of the thicket and then ran off the other way.  We decided to let it sit overnight because of how cool it was last night and then use my Drathaar to blood trail him this morning.

At about 9:30 CJ and I got to the last place he was and put Yoli on the ground.  She started out trailing great, but when we found were he was last laying before we had jumped him the night before that is when found a lot clotted blood and that was the end of the blood trail.  Well Yoli started looping around and for a while we were stumped and were just about to give it up when I saw her start working down a game trail vigorously so I walked down the trail about 60 yds and found 2 drops of clotted blood mixed with digested food(Gut Shot!)  About that time Yoli came back to me to recheck her trail and I encouraged her to work it out.  She went about another 60 yds and let out a couple of barks then here she came flying back down the trail with that boar hog right on her tail!  CJ and I went for the nearest trees and the boar stopped about 15yds out and just stood there popping those jaws.  I grabbed the gun, ( a 460 Roland) and shot once and thats all it took to bring him charging at us both again.  He stopped this time about 5 yds out and went back into the brush.  I then handed the gun back to CJ and began to work my away around to where Yoli was baying it again while CJ tried to get another shot.  Again the boar charged again and was taking the bullets without even flinching.  Finally, after his fourth charge we were out of bullets and both of us were sitting in trees talking about how we wished we would have brought a catch dog, more bullets, or just a high powered rifle while Yoli was still baying this boar right under us.  After about 5 minutes he started to show fatigue and I got down and slipped up behind him and grabbed his tail.  CJ helped me flip him and he finished him off with a blade.

We then examined this hog and he had taken a Bone Crusher broad head through the gut, 3 shots from the pistol, which is equivalent to a .44 mag, and finally fell to the blade.  This hog was one TOUGH SOB!  But most importantly my dog, Yoli, really did a good job finding this hog on such a old trail and up wind from the hog.  Also, it was much better than looking for a deer! Good job on getting it done! I am glad your Drathaar is working out for you. Where did you shoot the hog that it ate 3 shots? That is one tough pig!

Chest, shoulder, and butt.  3 hits out of 7 shots, not bad when he is charging straight at you and trying to shoot around the dog. Wink

I can remeber quiet a few times thinking, If I only had a catchdog...
Do you hunt that Drathaar or did you just use him in this situation?

Yeah, that was one of the topics of discussion while we were sitting in the trees hoping that it would die.  Along with why dont we bring a box of bullets instead of just a clip.  I actually was suprised he was still alive considering the amount of blood that was on the ground from the night before.  Hogs are tough, which we already knew!  As for the Drathaart, Yoli, I hunt ducks, quail, hogs, and a whole variety of varmits with her.  She is basically a meat dog,but they dont handle this heat well so I only use her when its cool.  She has past the 24 hr old blood trail test two years ago, but this was her first time to trail again since then.

Scott,

I am going to try and make it down, but I have to stay pretty close to watch the business especially on the weekends.

Appreciate all the comments fellas.

Thank you fellas!

Marvin,

A boar without a catchdog on it and is ready to fight isnt any fun at all!  Especially in those darn CRPs!:)  Dang the tie vines!

GAhunter,

There is fella up in our part of the country that has some supposed well bred big game (Boar) Drathaars in your neck of the woods.  Has a female with that he is trying to place in a hunting home a reasonable price.  I suggest if you get one and join the Drathaar society chapter in your region.  They are very driven and smart dogs.  PM if you would like his contact info.

Absolutely outrageously impressive.   Love that dog.

However, it's not all instinct. Give the Dratts their due, but they are way too much dog for most. If JHY was not the dog trainer and expert hog man it would be another matter. It takes both dog and man working in concert to make it productive.

Bud,

Thank you for the kind words, but I have come to the realization that the dogs are actually training me and the hogs are training us both!LOL  Yoli is a GREAT DOG, but she can be frustrating as well, due to her intelligence level.  She can get into all sorts of trouble.  For instance, If Tammy and I leave her locked up in the bedroom for any extended period of time she can open the clothes drawers (which is solid mahogny chest of drawers) get Tammys pajamas and workout clothes out and lay them across the bed.  Then she will rearrange the furniture by turning the over stuffed chair 90 degrees everytime.  If we leave her in the house she will open and sometimes shut the freezer draw if there is toaster strudel icing in there, but mostly just get into the pantry and steal bread, which she then will hide by stuffing down in the cushions of the couch or chairs.  If we leave her outside she will just get out of  the backyard and team up with Lilly (Jagd) and clear the neighbor hood of cats, coons, and squirrels.  In fact Lilly had one for us last night when we got home.  I shot my first deer with a bow yesterday morning and used Yoli and Lilly to find it.  Cant wait till it gets down below 60 degrees so I can watch Yoli and Lilly flat out HUNT HARD all day.

Also, Yoli is a bay pen dog as well.  Second time ever in a bay pen, first time was practice at Buds house, she placed 14th out of 32 dogs.  Bud, I may go bay her and Lilly in the Bay trial down the road this weekend just to stir those catahoula boys up!
