Now that deer season has begun and there are not many places near us to comfortably hunt our finished dogs safely during the daylight hours we usually take this time of the year to start some pups. This group of pups is just turning 8 months old and two are 8 ½ months old.
Two of the pups we are starting are out of Clue Anderson’s Cowboy dog and our Sara gyp. We named these pups “ Clue & Lisa “. One male pup out of Chance Ward’s Ellie gyp and our Bear dog, his name is Pistol. We’ll probably wait another month or so to start the two gyps out of Ellie and Bear.
Our pups are pen raised and had never been out of the kennel or seen a hog till this weekend. Buckhunter 1983 was there with a couple of pups he’s getting started.
Saturday we took them to the woods for the first time, we let them see their first hog, bay him a while, messed with them a little bit and quit on a good note. Sunday we cut a hog loose and gave him time enough get out of sight good into the woods, and then cut the pups loose. They tracked him about 500 yards and got him bayed.
The second hog we turned loose, we gave him about a 10-minute head start and cut the pups loose. They got him bayed about a mile from where we started.
Hard to impress harsh critics on dog work but those pups would have gotten any old timers attention.

The three yellow pups belong to us. From left to right they are “ Clue”, “ Pistol” and ” Lisa “.
The Brindle and Red Pups are Buck hunter’s pups that he is starting. The Brindle pup is out of a plot gyp and Bear, not sure how his red pup is bred.

Another pic

Chance, A pic of a old gyp we retired Dot. along with 2 of Ellie's gyp pups and Lisa. Havent posted a pic of those pups in a long time. You can kind of see how those pups are growin up.

Them yella pups left me speachless when they took out after these lil pigs, for it being their first time ever in a truck let alone in the woods and they took to it like they did it blew my mind. But I guess that is what a good breeding program is supposed to do. Im already fond of that Lisa pup, I really like her.

Keep those pups in pigs and keep testing them. Good hunt!

Skoal i took my pups out Sunday afternoon, using the old string trick.  Truned the pig loose and gave him about 10 minutes, and let the pups loose.  Two of the pups ran right over the track just happy to be out, but JoJo (Bear and Ellie's pup) put his nose on the ground and run the track.  The other two pups ran in after him.  In a few minutes i heard a couple of barks then pig gruntin.  Apparantly the pig only made it bout 200 yards before he hung up.  So i let em work for a few then caught the pig and took the string off.  This time i gave him about 20 minutes, enough time to let the dogs settle down.  Turned em loose again and same thing JoJo had his nose to the ground.  I watched him work that track about 15-20 minutes.  He would work it and then lose it, come back to where i let the pig go and work it again.  I finally decieded to let Hoss go and help.  I let him go and then I heard JoJo ring out while i could still see Hoss, and the bay was on.  The other pups did bay good, the gritty one even back up and bayed a little bit.
sorry phone pics ain't the best

Thanks guys.. and thanks to Clue and Chance !!

Brandon,
Sounds like he may want to make a dog Brandon, your doin a good job with him. Come on down, we'll work  & hunt those pups in shifts..  I am sure pleased with those pups out of Ellie and Bear so far. Long way to go but they actin right and doin right so far.. They are sure some smart suckers, that's for sure.
I think we about decided we'd be foolish not to breed the " evil-one" Sara to Cowboy again, so there will be one down for a while when she comes in.. .. Don't mean those pups will make the cut down the road but right now , I mean, I have seen lots of pups start and progress, I just never saw any pups start and take to it like those 3 pups have.

Ben,
That Lisa gyp blew my mind to Ben, wasent expecting what they did at all.  I tell ya what Ben, that brindle pup looks to me like he's got the potential to make a nice dog himself, I was impressed with him to.

All I can say is wow, for never seeing a pig or the woods and they take a track, follow, and bay the heck out of it that is something else there. I hope they turn out to be great dogs but they have a hell of a stanard to get there with you two fellas.
