I have a bunch of pups that need to be getting started but I don't have anywhere to keep a pig right now. Someone found a lil wild pot belly pig on the side of the road and we've tried using him in a field. I have one pup that nibbles on it and rolls it up but nothin' is barking at it. Any ideas on getting dogs started in my circumstances? any help or thoughts would be appreciated. pups are 4 and 6 months old

That is just plain ignorant w/  4 & 6 m/o pups IMO.......

Heavenseant, get them used to loading, make short trips to the woods to get them woods broke....they will start when they are individually ready.

done it many many times. never had it turn out bad. hog hits the dogs and runs back to the other side. always flips the switch. i started from all pups too. had no older dogs to help train em and no one to hunt with that had em. all my dogs have hated hogs from about 5 months old.

Just give em time. I have friends with grown dogs but all my dogs are young. I had to start  mine one or maybe two at a time. Seemed like every time I turned em all out they thought it was play time and acted like a bunch of school kids. Also the wilder pigs will  help, they may just be bored with the potbellied pet pig.

If you throw them in a trailer with a big pig it may ruin them what i do to train my pups i just get a old dog and let it bay it and just let a puppy go one by one and they will get the hand of it eventually!!!

hobbled a 100 lb boar and had an older dog bayin' it. tried 2 pups at a time and nothin' turned the switch on. How long should I wait to try again? I know when I get these pups trained I'll be done with the puppy stuff for quite awhile lol.

just keep workin them pups with the older dog bayin, they will figure it out. take em out 3 or 4 times a week if you can just dont do it too long they will get bord of it. make them want to do it, like that is there play time. it might take a week of it or it might take a month or two but they will get it. they are pups i dont like takein them out to the woods till they are 8 months or so, but thats me. and what ever you do dont toss ur pups in with a pissed of boar hog like you were told before, ive seen to many pups that went to trash because of folks doin dumb stuff like that. like i said just keep workin em with the old dog they will get it.

no body on here likes my idea of the pissed off hog in the trailer.  Tongue i just like my dogs to get angry when they smell or see a hog. most of you guys are alot more experienced than me, so for each his own. some dogs find a bay cause they enjoy it, mine find and bay cause of hatred. i havent had a bad experience doing it my way but doesn't mean i wont. so far its working for me and several guys i know. not all hogs are the same some are right for the job some are not.

finally got one of the 6 month old pups to bayin' and the more I praised him the more he got with it. He's a bobbed tail 1/2 kemmer cur 1/2 catahoula fawn with blue brindle stripes. the younger pups barked their head off like the wanted some and when i put them in with him they just sniffed the pig and hung out. But i'm very glad to finally get one startin' to bay. Makes it a lil easier to feed 'em  Smiley

i take mine out at about 4-5 months...Let them run with an older experienced dog for a couple of hunts.
The rest them for another 2-3 months....By then they are usually mature enough (just) to take it to the next level!
