i think the reason alot of people dont hood hunt is because they dont have spots that are really big enough to hood. the only time i ever get to hood is when i hunt with my buddies in oklahoma. i agree with you though it has to save there energy, i know it dang sure saves mine lol

It depends on the property your hunting. Most places I hunt are big blocks of woods, dogs need to be on the ground and going through them.

M Bennet- If your dogs are winding hogs from your hood at that distance, Don't stop! I would keep it in your arsenal and just try your dogs on a ground hunt every now and again. If you're bringing home the bacon and are just trying to tighten up the squad that is my advice and .3 cents! Good luck! I'm currently using very non traditional hogdog techniques to train my dogs right now and I know a few of the old timers are chuckling like little girls behind my back but I can tell you my dog can wind a hog ALOT further then they're dog ever will and differentiate between a boar and sow at that distance! Use what works for you, Let the rest talk!

I hood hunt and save my dogs a lot of energy. Also keeps them in very good shape. By that i mean as in less feed. My dogs don have to work as hard until they strike. I think even when Hunting a small area i prefer hood hunting. Why does it matter how fast you hunt the land? As long as you hunt it all and find there is no hogs there.

Have seen a jadg wind a hog then bay it in its bed. I really doubt the hog moved at all. 400 yards. I dont doubt a dog can wind a hog at 800, just very few that can. If you are catching hogs then who cares how you do it. I wish I had a dog that could ride the hood.

We normally just ground hunt because we dont have a hood dog. We have had one wind a couple times from the bed of the truck but that may have just been luck. If anyone wants to give me a good hood dog I will start hunting that way. lol.

I let mine wind from the truck or ranger. Like you said cover a lot of ground and don't wear the dogs out. My son use to put his on the ground and walk. He told me I was just lazy for riding around I took him one morning and put my dogs on the box and caught three hogs in about 45 minutes No point in changing a good thing.

I have never really tried to hood hunt. I guess the main reason why is because i enjoy getting out and walking around the woods with the dogs. to me it gets boring driving around.
