how do you guys pick up new land? do you get reffered? do you "advertise" at local places? or what other things do you do when trying to pick up new places? I consider myself a pretty smooth talker and I always offer to take the land owner hunting with us but most people are still really hesitant. What extra little things do you guys do to "seal the deal" when talking to a land owner about picking up a new place.

Word of mouth is the best way. Go do a landowner a good job and he'll spread the word. One thing I have learned is that there is very little use in talking with a landowner who purchased their property just to deer hunt. They just don't understand what the hogs do to them, YET. Good luck in your search.

When we were trying to get a foothold in south GA years ago,....I asked a landowner where we had hunted for a few years to give us a letter of recommendation...he gladly agreed....best idea I've had in years. It opened door for us that otherwise would have stayed shut. He had this property to deer hunt andwe only got to go once or twice a year and this was only because his best friend was related to my hunting buddy. He just couldn't get it in his head that our hog hunting had no affect on the deer. That letter helped us out more than anything we had done in the past.....it had a short statement about how we had treated his property while hunting on it and his phone number. Good luck.

It's easy to judge the character of a man,....by how he treats those that can do nothing for him.

We got some business cards made up and put them in feed stores and vet clinics. We pic up a little land that way. The last place we picked up is a place that borders my ranch and I'd been trying to get intouch with the owner for awhile, and after talkin with folks that know him said that he was a hard azz, he called me and I asked if our dogs ended up on his place while on a hog if it was ok to go in and get them. His answer suprised me. He said no you cant go in and get your dogs, yall can go in with them and take as many hogs as yall can catch. So that added 4000 more acres to hunt on. Word of mouth is good and my huntin buddie that got me into doggin is the county trapper for this area and he has a great reputation(SP?) and we get land that way also.
