Y'all might want to keep an eye on your dogs if you get into ticks a bunch. My main strike dog Tweety was diagnosed with this today. Luckily it is in the early stages and treatable with no problems.

I thought she was real wormy and couldn't knock them. I've wormed and wormed and wormed... still couldn't put any weight on her. She started acting real lethargic and stiff like her joints were hurting her. I just assumed she was burnt out from hunting because she covers a lot of ground and is constantly running.

Good thing is, she is worm free... so my worming program works. Grin

I think it was jls41 that just lost a dog to this recently, maybe she can pass on more information.

Mike,

I used to have a dog named Ace that was diagnosed with Ehrlichia Canis about two years ago.  Most blood tests for heartworms also test for Lyme disease and Ehrlichia.  It's pretty uncommon...in fact when the one square turned dark on the pad, my vet had to refer to the book to see what that meant.  We found it through the yearly heartworm test I do on my dogs, and he didn't show any symptoms.

Unless it's advanced to the chronic stage, it's usually treatable with a simple regimen of antibiotics.  Funny thing is, the dog can stay infected but in a less-severe stage for years before it either worsens or the body eliminates it.  It's transmitted through tick bites and cannot be transmitted dog-to-dog.

It's rare, but us people are also susceptible but also only directly through a tick bite.

Mike, you are correct about it being jls41, luckily you found it early enough, we did not. RIP Bonita (Bonnie).

Mike, thanks for posting this.  I had never heard of it but its something to keep in mind.  The poor dogs were covered in ticks after every hunt this summer.  Thank goodness they have slowed down now that its cooled down.

Looks like slim hooked ya'll up on some info on the disease.  Glad to hear that you caught it early and that you can get your dog treated.  Gotta watch those nasty ticks!!
