Dogos

In the market for a bigger CD type, something I can also outcross with hunting stock.  For you Dogo people, what thoughts do you have on the dogs out there?

Los Cazadores?

Rankin?

LA Dogos?

I'm interested in working lines, and I'm not sure on who produces consistently good stock in the states.  In my research I've found a few Argentinian kennels that look right... if you haven't seen these, you need to.

These two are the ideal of how a breeding program should operate.

Anyone know a Randy Kindred from OK?  I'd love to get together with him and discuss what he experienced down there.

i dont remember the name, but there is a kennel in Florida ran by Argentinians. they were given a pair from the 2 brothers who developed the breed years ago, and still breed according to the original standards. they're on the web, wish i could remember the name for you.

Noah I have had 4 dogos I'm not going to say where they came from but they are like anything else they should be culled hard buy the breeders and bred that way. I have one now I have had him going on 3yrs he will go catch one and is great around my kids and around other dogs never been a problem he came from Dan Moody.The other 3 barked at a hog and would not catch and were culled thats my only experience with them.

JW, I think I know what kennel you're talking about.  The problem is, the majority of the american kennels do not hunt their dogs, and the functionality of the breed disappears pretty quick.  They may look good and will probably catch, but the true "hunting dog" qualities are severely diluted.

Des, I'm right there with you on the culling... cull hard.  It's the only way to create better dogs.

Noah, talk to Marvin Garrett on here is LA dogos, he is Lousiana, and has dogs from Denmark and some of the best blood around from what I understand has a very succesful rate at producing solid dogs that catch.

I admire a good dog, no matter the breed, so I am not downing the breed at all, I own one that I absolutely love, she is in my foundation breeding because I think so much of her, and the only reason she is not still catching hogs is because she suffered a bad injury to her back leg that causes her to limp bad, but She & I have caught many a good hog together for few good years, now we are both older.

I do hear alot about good dogos and bad dogos, as MR. HG said, just like the cur dogs, anybody can say what they want to on their website.
Alot of the Dogo kennels that "test" or "prove" their dogs on hogs are a BIG JOKE!  alot of it is done in a pen. If you keep reading the Dogo was originated to hunt in a Pack, and all dogs together could take down and control large game, they were not expected to do the job one-on-one like most "Bulldogs" so with that in their design, intellegence, &  self preservation will create dog that will Bark, and re-grip when it does not feel comfortable, with the dogos hunting natural you will see plenty of pics with the dog already caught, but rarely do you see them intially doing the job from start to finish as see see if that is what you want.

Again like any breed, alot are watered down for the show ring and not bred for original traits.

LaDogos, has a big male, I believe his name is Ricado, and that dog looks like a MONSTER, I have seen him as the Dogo Speciatly a few years back in person (HUMUNGEOS) my first impression was that dog is too heavy to be all that athletic! But that goes to show that you can't judge a book by its cover, because Marvin uses that dog on alot of hogs and talks about broken bays and that dog has to do alot of running and catching from the storys Marvin post ( Have yet to hunt with him in person), but talk to him and he can probaly tell you more in detail.

It is just my opinion you have to judge the dog as an individual and not based on the whole breed.

Good points Krystal, I am looking for actual hunting dogos, not just a CD... so that aspect doesn't bother me at all.  I've always preferred a CD with some intelligence anyways, so it'd fit me perfect!  I'll definitely give Marvin a shout

I consider my catch dog big, but he is just a little guy compared to Marvin's brutes. 

I too have hunted with Marvin and have seen his dogs catch and manhandle a really rank boar one morning.  Later that after noon we had about 50 head run across a huge field while fleeing the bay dogs and his dogs ran down a nice sow.  So gamey they are, and from his stories he is able to catch big hogs with one dogo.  So if you are looking for a big breed he would definitely be a person to talk to.

I have a female Dogo , Adora (Recado x Jane), that I got as a pup from Marvin at LA Dogos.

She is a wonderful dog. Good size, lots of leg, lots of wind, good grip and a good nose...oh and she is really really fast. She trained real easy and was catching for me in the field at 9 months. I am super happy with her and if I were you, I would put Marvin first or your list.

Dosnt matter what the dog does at a year its still a A$$ load of money for a puppy. I was going to get one till i priced them and i got a ab/pitt cross much much cheaper. On the other side ive heard alot of good about dogos but the only dealings ive had with one he bayed prettier than my cur dogs...

you're probably right about that kennel Noah, I think they mostly do shutzhund type work with their dogs

I have had some bad experiences with dogos im sure there are some good ones out there and im not trying to put down dogos but the five or six that i have tried either took a long time to get started or they regrip all the time while caught and i dont put up with that its too dangerous they get knocked off and hog breaks.

i don't know about the dogos , but i've got some real big ukc breed pits i should have pups on the ground Sat. . i'll give one to you with ADBA papers in hand if you work him . the last litter i bred (Maijor X Alleman's Pea ). Maijor is 75-80 pds. and Pea is 40-45 pds. and the little male i kept is now 51 pds. at 11 mth. 

    these are the two i will have the litter with Sat. powder girl is about 40pds. and Maijor is big like i said before 23in. head  powder is game as hell . like i said you can have a pup just let me know !!
