I have 1500 acres up in San Jacinto COunty that I have hunted for the past 10 years with a few friends.
The Game Warden dropped by Opening weekend of the Gun Season and mentiond that at least San Jac County is going to antler restrictions next year (13" inside spread, Spike or at least one un branched antler)

I think it is great!

I believe this is the third year since they put us under the 13" antler restriction in Marion/Cass countys and there has been a noticable change for the better.

I'm all for it so we have better deer, but I do fear when the antler quality is signifigantly larger so too will be the lease fees I pay.

In discussions with folks in the timber industry, I have been told that this particular restriction/law was driven and pushed for by the timber companies in an effort to justify charging higher lease fees. Many East Texas hunters have let their leases go with the idea that they would rather pay for a few day hunts for large animals down South than a lease for the entire year with mediocre deer. Rather than lower fees to keep hunters leasing, they pushed for the restictions to justify charging more. This is merely hearsay and I can't prove a word of it, but it makes sense to me and I have seen similar instances first hand. Antler restiction are a subject I'm torn on. --John

The only thing about the 13" thing is that all the turds you cant kill. Like those 10" 3.5yr 4points turds you dont want breeding your does.
