Hey I been lookin at this site and readin u guys comments about anything and everything and have learned some things,,,,  thanks. Just joined myself and got a question? I can't keep a good cd due to dog agression and just dumb stuff, so I been using the family pet raised him from a pup would hate to loose him. I vest and collar him every time never cut him until I'm at the most 30 or 40 yards from the bay he catches good 99% of the time but not what I would call a finished cd. So my question is how many of u guys who do everything u can as in vest collar ECT... To protect ur CDs end up loosing them to the "nature" of the sport?  I've been hunting a while and never lost a cd  but just recently stold a jam up dog from Monty b for half what's she is worth and getting on alot of big hog just curiouse thanks for the info

seems like you are doing good so far with him. If you have a tracking system and an extra collar I would recommend putting it on him, just in case you turn him loose and the hog breaks bay right before the CD gets there. They might run 50 yards or 200 yards, but if the CD gets hit and injured you can always find him out of the woods and tended to.

Hunting a family house pet is not a good idea especially if the household family members(Children) are attached to the animal. Ive explained many times to my kids what goes on hog doggin and what can and will happen. They have their favorites out in the kennel but their real pets(companion) are not hunted. This is just me but a devistated child of mine is a horrible feeling for me.

Not a good idea! If you are attached the chances of something happening to it goes up 100% no matter how hard you try to protect it! I have learned this by experiance!

We have had several of our house pets, #1 catch dogs live out their life at old age, most were semi retired between 5-6 years from catching, but used for many other purposes. All dogs but one little mutt have to have a job, not because I am hardazz but because, its the healthiest for the mental state of the dog.

My daughter ws raised with this and yes these dogs slept with her at times, now a freshman at A&M, with her House pet is as good of a strike dog as any on my yard, wears a pink Aggie collar and visits with alot of College kids. When they come home they still go to the woods, my Daughter is fully aware of what can and does happen as she has helped put handle and put dogs back together. She is an animal Science major with a goal of becoming a Vet.

My belief is this, DON"T SUGAR COAT IT, BE HONEST, I never lied to my daughter aboutthye realities. She was allowed to choose between a "cute little pet" or a working dog, if she got a working then it has to work, if you don't then the dog will be gone. I meant it, I stuck to it and she learned valuable lessons from it. Like I said I gave her the option for her own dogs, and well I am very proud to say today, she still knows the consequences and makes her own choices, right or wrong the consequences are her own to deal with, but We never put any deception there. To many touchy feely people in this world trying to hide things from their kids, and we wonder why the youth of don't have any values of responsibility? I will get off my soap box, as this was not meant towards people that introduce their kids to hunting and the outdoors and keep their kids active. JMO  in a nutshell, I love my Catchdogs as a family, I love them enough that I want them to be fullfilled in the canine world, and that comes from being used just as much as it does from being a beloved pet, and thats why I would not deny my working bred dogs the oppertunities to work, No more than I would keep my daughter locked in the house because i am afraid she might be involved in a car accident.

Dusty, Ive seen full grown adults go into depression from losing a pet and took years for them to come out of it. Its not just children that are affected by a beloved pet being killed.

if your real attatched to the dog i would not take it hunting, i would find me something else to catch with, catch dogs are easy to come by and not real expensive, i have a rednose female that stays inside with me and if it was up to her catchin i wouldnt ever catch another hog, its just a call your gonna have to make, and if you have luck like me if i get attached to a dog something usually happens to it, good luck

If they die Hunting! They died with their boots on!! Better than in a kennel or on a chain.  JMO

vest or no vest a dog stands a chance of getting killed one way or another every time you turn it loose.  If you are going to be upset if something happens to it, best leave it in the house.

I have seen bulldogs retire of old age that have never worn a vest, but had three year old drown in the river a few years ago before I could swim out to him.  You never know what is going to happen.

the dog in my avatar is our #1 strike dog and my grand babies best friend. Everytime we turn her out my heart sinks for she has been cut bad a couple of times, but if you leave her in the kennel, she pouts and will chew things up. She is much happier hunting than just hanging around, so we hunt her.

I treat all my dogs like my house dogs. Dogs were given to us by God to hunt for us and protect us. Take care of them and they will do most anything for you. If you have doubts about this, spell dog backwards {GOD).
