non gritty dogs

i was wondering about dogs that dont put any mouth on a hog ive never owned one but was interested in one if they dont put no mouth how the hell is it goin to shut them down or for instence a whole pack of no mouth puttin dogs dont think they will be any shut down there

Biting dogs arent always gonna "shut down" a hog.

I think it has alot to do with the hogs! Some of the places I have to hunt the hogs will break if any pressure is put on them at all. For these places I think you could catch more hogs with one or two loose bayin dogs cause they stand still long enough for the CD's to get there.

right i understand that and sometimes causes them to break more but with a dog eating some balls up will sit that hog down before one that dont right

I see more dogs shut down  hogs by "getting ahead" than than putting a mouth on them. I have also seen hogs catch another gear when a dog does put a mouth on him also.
You can get away with either kind of dog if the dog is good at what it does! A hog will leave both kinds of dogs if they suck.

Which one is better? I aint sure but I prefer a dog that will get ahead. They just seem to bay more hogs in my opinion. I have owned some dang fine dogs that would latch up on one that tried to leave but they wouldnt let go for nothing until the hog stopped. Sometimes that ment a hog dragging them a hell of a long way!

Some hogs will stop when a dog latches up on their hind ends. Some will just run faster and leave the county taking the dog with em.

this is ture but my yellow cat eats em up and hogs dont run nearly as far as they use to

It's 50/50 from what i've experienced... some stop, some run harder.

The dog didn't shut the hog dog in the blown down, root ball, creek bank, etc... the hog chose where to stop.

Whether rough or loose, bottom is the key where the hogs run real bad.

my main strike dog is not gritty at all but if a hog breaks i just give him a minute an hell bay it back up  my help dog which is my cat lab mix with alot of speed will actually catch its ear and make it stop and then bay   i kinda get the best of both worlds but i do like the get ahead approach dogs as the ninja called it cuz it seems less likely that hell get hurt by a hog like that  im afraid one day my cat lab is gonna get tusked catchin em on the ear  but to each his own  i like the get ahead approach also mr ninja

A dog cant keep up with a hog that is truely running to put any teeth on him unless its in the open

 I am suprised at all the people that can see their dog "outting teeth on a hog" in a race.

    I like loose baying dogs. I like having to drop the bulldogs to catch a 100lb sow. It may cost me a few hogs but meat is cheap at HEB.

What do you mean "get ahead" ? like getting in front of a running hog? I never even thought that was a way to stop one. I figured it was hard enough for a dog to get close enough to a running hog to bite butt. I thouhgt if you had a dog that wouldn't bite a hog AT ALL, it wouldn't usually be able to bay one up unless the pig just wanted to fight.

I like not having to worry about my "non gritty" dog when I hear him barking, I know he won't try anything stupid. He may have a smaller hog bayed, but at least I don't have to worry about him getting cut down all the time. But I do think he will bite a hog to try to turn it around, I don't consider that "grit"

I don't consider a dog that will bite a hog to stop it gritty either a dog that will catch or bite a hog that's already stopped that's gritty  I have hunted with a dog that won't stop one and just run with it for miles  that could be a lot of extra work tryn to get around a hog or a dog to cut it off   Every turn ou could turn into a 2 hour plus ordeal  in my personal opionion I would rather have a dog put a lil teeth on one and get it stopped pretty close to wear it's found. Not that all none gritty dogs will run for miles tryn to stay with a hog.    Just the experience I had with one

caught 12 head today with bay dogs and 2 catch dogs & when we put them in the trailer the hogs didn't look like they had been used for alligater bait .

you just need to find a style off hunting that you like and works. and dont worry about what other people think cause there not feeding them. if your happy thats all that matters. me i run veryrough dogs they mite bark once or twice and all 4 will catch, ask the guys that hunt with me they dodnt run to far and my dogs dont get cutt up bad or not even a scratch but i personaly dont like to chase hogs to far but my style is hood hunting , all styles work just find what fits you good luck

Most ppl use loose baying dogs cause its a way to see all the aspects in the sport the strike the bay and the catch there's no since in haveing running catch dogs that there calling bay dogs and most ppl get tierd of stitching and buying new dogs cause there gritty just saying that bottom beats balls any day

Alot of times a running hog will squat and  a loose dog will wind him and give him plenty of room knowing where he is witch will make the hog hold better because he feels no threat!

I have a Black Gyp that was bayed and My buddies who have never hunted behind  her called said she is baying her ass off but there is no hog! They had done stompped that thicket down with there horse's and no hog! I was tieing another hog and told them I will be there in a miniute when I showed up I told the gyp to show me the hog and she went right where they had done stomped and bayed the hog tighter!
But I have alot of loose baying dogs and catch lots of Runners!
