Good boar 12-5

Killed this Boar today. He ran just over 4 miles in total and the dogs were on him for ~2 hours and 45 mins. Started him at about 3:30 and finally shot him at 6:15. I was by my self and had two dogs. Paris my 7 year old btch and Joe my 3 legged dog. Not bad for a geriatric and handicapted dog and about time I got one of these super bad running boar hogs killed Wink

. All Joking aside this hog was very keen.....I busted the bay on my approach 4 maybe 5 times. Story as follows.....

They started this hog and it seemed like a solid bay. I approached and was about 50 yards away and the hog broke. Dont know if it was my niose or not. The hog ran about 400 yards and bayed again. Its so dry that every step in the leaves is very noisy and this time he is in very thick brush so I have to crawl. I get about 35 yards away and can see the hogs outline and as I maneuver for a better shot, the hog sees or hears me and leaves. As I follow I realize my garmin is no longer on my hip. I Must have lost is somewhere crawling through the brush. The hog bays again about 200 yards out and I follow up. Once again, the noise from my approach busts the bay. By now the hog is about to run out of woods but he cuts across the cow pasture and I get to see the dogs work him hard untill they cross a buisy county road, into another of our cow pastures, and out of sight. I walk back to the truck which is about 1.5 miles away by now. I cut through the thicket, back track and luckily find my garmin. Hightail it to the truck and on my way to locate the dogs, I picked them back up and showing treed near a gravel county road. I get there and they are bayed 300 yards off the road. At this point the hog has traveled over 3 miles from where we started him. I try to call the dogs out but no luck. I located the land owner and they said go ahead. I drive in close and while I approach in all the noisy leaves the hog breaks again just before I get close enough for a shot. They bay him again about 400 yards into another place and 200 yards off an different county road. I drive around to call them out and again had no luck but the hog drifted back onto the other place. By the time I get back around its getting hard to see and they are bayed in another impossible thicket. I get close and try to call them out but after a few minutes of that it only causes the hog to break bay for a 5th time. I get in the truck quick and follow allong the wood line using the garmin. I realize they are heading for the county road so I try to get there fast and cut them off and finnally I catch a break and the hog turns just before the road and I see Paris burning him up across the hay field in front of me. I put the hammer down with thoughts of running the hog over. I closed the gap quick, and better judgement overcame me. I grabbed the rifle from the seat next to me, stuck It out the window, pulled the hammer back and slid to a stop right in the hogs path. He pulled up and tried to cut behind me but it was too late. I shot him with the last bit light in the sky. Loaded the hog and dogs. The hog traveled just over 4 miles total.
