Here's the deal. Three of us Hog hunters (Grandpa, Uncle, and me) are always disagreeing about this. Also, what about the Catahoula Hound and Leopard Hound.
Are Catahoula and Leopard interchangeable? Are they 4 different breeds of Dog? Catahoula Cur, Leopard Cur, Catahoula Hound, and Leopard Hound Are they 2 different breeds? Catahoula/Leopard Hound and Catahoula/Leopard Cur? Are they all the same?
Who can solve our family argument? I have my opinion, but will save it until I hear y'alls.

What I heard was the Leopard Dog was mixed with something to get the Catahoula but it could be they are the same. A Catahoula Cur would be a cross of the two dogs or someone making up a name. But there ain't no hound in Cur or Catahoula unless they are Ninja's. But I have no facts to back up any of what I said. I am totally going off what I heard. I also wanted to stir things up a little. I figure if my dog finds hogs and bays hogs then you can call them whatever you want.

i agree to an extent. i had a solid catahoula which was stocky type dog but not tall. my buddy had his litter mate a leapord which was lanky and leggy. i had a leapord which was huge dog. as far as size there no certain size. as there registered there not regesterd as hound and some cur there all just catahoulas so i believe there just ppl hear a different bark and decide its hound or cur. not a set type dog.
this is my opion but dexter is close to it also

They are two different dogs with different registries. The lepord hound is a HOUND it doesnt look or act like a catahoula. There was a thread on here a while back about this. Maybe sombody can find it but I had pictures on the of a lep hound I used to have.

the Catahoula blood line possesses the merle gene ,, thats what give's them the spotted coat in most dogs it only effects black colored fur,, so the dog's that have leapard coats could produce solid black or brown pups,, Heelers are the same way i use to have a red and blue cross heeler bitch that would produce 1 solid black pup every time.

This website lists 3 different breeds. Leopard Hound, Catahoula Cur, and Catahoula Leopard. He lists a Catahoula Cur as a Tree Hound.

In Full Cry magazine people are always mentioning Catahoula Hounds. Is there such a thing? Or are they just misspeaking? Are they really just talking about Leopard Hounds? Or maybe Catahoula Leopards?

Leopard cur and leopard hound are the same. The cur was changed to hound so they can compete in certain field trials. If I wanted a leopard colored hunting dog I would buy a Leopard cur because they were bred to hunt and that is it. They are cold nosed track driving kind of dogs and the majority are open trailers. The Catahoula leopard cur is totally diferent in that they were bred to work livestock and also to be all around ranch dogs. I will stop right here on the catahoula. I believe crossing the right catahoula with the right Leopard cur could produce a great hog dog...

Catahoula leopard cur and leopard cur/hound are very different.
It is like the mountain cur compared to the Black Mouth Cur, totally different.

depends on if you mean now or in the beginning. there are different registries now of course, and different types of dogs. no question about that. but i always assumed they were origionally all "catahoulas", and were called leopard dogs because of the predominant coloring. and i assume they all came from the same dogs. even 30 years ago there wasnt a very uniform type. some were more houndy lookin, some more bully lookin. even had some that looked like they had a little greyhound in em. all were supposed to be catahoulas. but among the people i knew, they always just called em leopard dogs, unless they were talkin to someone unfamiliar with them, then they might say catahoula cause it was more likely they had heard of that name before. i think there has been so much mixed breeding that none of em are full anything anymore. who knows what the early ones were like. there has been way to much breeding for looks. not many i know of who have bred true to type, ability, and soundness, like some of the guys on here have done with the yella dogs. and thats a shame.

RockinW, I believe your on to something. Growing up as a kid, there were lots of cowdogs around. They were always consider leopard curs. They came in every shape and color. The tranq. gun took their place, so the dogs sort of disappeared. When I got back around cowdogs and hog dogs they're all called differently. Got me really confused. Its like registered cattle, some like red, some black, some with horns, and some without etc. their all cows to me.
