lately we have caught a few small shoats and put em in the pen  the other nite we unloaded the last bigger hog an had 2 lil ones in there   1 about 5 lbs and 1 about 20 lbs   we let the youngsters in there to play and catch em  my cuzs kids had no problems and no fear but my boy would just chase em and then back off rite at the catch time so i told him to either catch it or get out the way   well he started towards the gate and i was gettin disappointed with him  he told me he was just scared of em  so i said ok leave em alone   finally the anxiety got to him and he jumped in there caught that lil 1 like hed been doin it for yrs then went after the bigger one but all the kids together couldnt catch it   when he 1st told me he was scared i wanted to make him go catch it but he is kind of soft sumtimes so i just let it go since mama would of got mad at me for forcin him to do sumthin like that that he didnt wana do  but im glad i just left it alone  he caught that small hog on his own free will and i think im prouder of that then i would of been if i would of made him do it   he smiled bigger than me when he brought me that hog and i dont think i stopped smilin for 2 hrs   maybe not much 2 yall but my youngest boy is 3 yrs old and has no fear of anything    hes just like me except that ive learned to think about things just a lil more now days    im just tickled to death that he went against his fear and got it done  love u kevin crieg

3!?!?!  Shocked LMAO!!!

I guess when you are 3 its good to size up a situation a little before jumping in with both feet!

I have seen 250 lbs men that stand over 6 and a half feet tall scared to death of a shoat!

He aint doing bad at all dad!

I hear ya bud. My lil boy is 4 and is about the same way. He is kinda scared of stuff to. My wife gets fightin mad when I try to make him do stuff and he doesnt want to do it. I get frustrated. I guess I just need to let him be himself and maybe he will come around.

Just wait until they are around 10-12 years old. They will scare you to death with the crazy chances they take!
Give em time and let them figure things out for themselves with good coaching from dad. A healthy respect for wild hogs may even spare a few ER trips down the road.  Wink

My son is 19 and in college now. He is one of the best hog hands I know but some of the stunts he pulled on big hogs when he was growing up has taken a few years off his old mans life!

coyote ... I have three boy's their 20,17 and 14. and the oldest and the youngest will hunt or kill anything but my middle son has just never had the stomach for it, He'll dove hunt but just doesn't like all the blood that comes with deer or hogs. but unlike the other two he is an excellent baseball/basketball player his high school coaches say he has a good chance at a scholaship to play ball somewhere. To me you just never know what their gonna be good at or really interested in. I just encoureged my boy to make their own path and not follow the pack.

Just keep encouraging them and showing them that you love them and that will be enough.  Let them know often how proud that you are of them and how lucky you feel to have such great kids.  I can speak from experience as a man that grew up with a dad that I met when I was 12 it works!  Not saying that you aren’t a good one but I do know that if you can be half as good as my dad was to my brothers and sister and I you will have nothing to worry about.  I am starting to blend a family too and I am just doing what I saw worked.

x2 don't force him, it does not sound like will have to! At 3 years old it sounds like you have a hand already. Like Ninja said they will scare you down the road with the lack of fear. My oldest son is around 100% fearless, at 6'-5" 240# I am still his dad that thinks he is my baby....

Shoot, my daughters only seven months old she already makes me believe I'm gonna have to teach her to be fearful of some things! My wife brought home a kitten 2weeks ago and to keep him from getting eaten, we let it stay inside and long story short Amanda had to run in the living room and pry our daughters fingers off of the kittens ears and tail Grin Bailey was stretching that kitten like a natural born cur.

I work with alot of kids at Christian camps and youth groups and these guys are right, boys will scare the crap outa you!!!

My six year old likes to go. He just sits back and looks over the situation. He ain't scared but he not running in. I take him as long as he wants to go.
