Ive never really had a problem with worms but about a month ago two of my three have been having what looks like little pieces of rice in the stool.  They are both drawn down and have lost some weight.  I always wormed on the 1st wih ivomec and just recetly added safeguard last month when i noticied the "rice" in thier poop. My dogs look like crap and ts driving me nuts.  Ive upped their feed but is not helping much.  Anyone have any suggestions??

wormers usually have 1 of 2 types of chemical that works 1 is pyrantel pamoate and 2 is fenbendazole, 1st day use 1, then the next day use the other to wipe out what the first didnt get, use table salt and pour all around their houses or where you keep them, this will kill larvae from their dueces, dollar store is cheap, get alot and use alot, then water to soak into the ground, between the 2 different uses, give yer dogs tappioca yogurt to sooth the lining of their stomachs because it will be irritated

Your dogs have tapeworms. Ivomec and Safeguard won't kill them. Zimectrin gold or anything else with praziquantel in it will get rid of them. Equimax will kill them but if you use it be careful because it's easy to overdose a dog with equimax.. The zimectrin gold is what I use..

X2... the Equimax works great for tapes, just give them a little dab on your finger about the size of a peanut m&m.

Matt, for what it's worth, I asked my vet about it and he stated that to give them enough of the praziquantel that's in the zimectrin gold to get rid of the tapes, you'd OD them on ivermectin. He told me it'd be better just to get the praziquantel at the feed store.

I've used the Zimectrin Gold for years with good results.  Check valley vet for other wormers.  Custom-collars.com is also a good source for wormers.

Regular broad spectrum wormers (such as Panacur, Safeguard, Strongid, Nemex) nor Ivomec will kill tapes.

You need Praziquantel.

http://www.amazon.com/Fish-Tapes-Forte-170mg-Cap/dp/B0013PTIOK

This is the inexpensive way.  One of these tablets will take care of a dog 60lbs or over.

I've also used Happy Jack's Tapeworm expellar but the tablets are big and a dosage requires several pills.  Had a hard time trying to get them down the dogs.

Zemectrin is just Ivomec, Zemectrin Gold also contains Praziquantel

Lone Star Working Dog Assoc. is in the process of compiling tons of information about parasites, so all dog owners can educate themselves about the process in order to make it more effective to prevent and treat them.

You can read up on alot of dog information at the LSWDA vet corner at

I just did the math on the Zimectrin Gold (1.55% Ivomec, 7.75% Praziquantel) Based on the canine dosage rate of each (Ivomec - .002250 mg/lb and Praziquantel - 2.5mg/lb).  The tube is advertised to treat one 1,250 lb horse based on the horse admin. rate of (Ivomec - 91mcg/lb and Praziquantel - 454 mcg/lb).  Given this info, we can calculate that the entire tube contains 113.75 mg of Ivomec and 567.50 mg of Praziquantel.  The ratio being 4.989

Using a 60lb dog for an example, to treat tapes the dog would need 150 mg of praziquantel (60lbs X 2.5mg).  Divide that by our ratio (4.989) and to administer that amount of Praziquantel to the dog would be giving the dog 30.066 mg (or cc's) of Ivomec.  A 60lb dog needs .135 cc of Ivomec.  (60lbs X .002250 mg/lb).

Based on these calculations, Scott is correct.  To treat them properly for the tapes, you would probably kill them on the Ivomec.

Ok so if i have this right Zimectrin gold has ivomec in it.  My problem here would be ive already given the dogs their ivomec for the month and dont want to od them with it.  So aside going to the vet the equimax is my best bet as far as being able to pick it up at a local feed store?

You won't overdose them on the ivermectin. It is fine.

Yes Zimecterin gold has Ivomec in it. If you are worried about overdosing them on the ivomec you can buy some praziquantel pills that are specifically for dogs, there are a lot of different brand names but they all have the same active ingredient,  praziquantel..  They are expensive...  You can also use Droncit or Drontal..
