I know just what you are talking about , If more people took owner ship for what they were doing we would not have some of the proplems running dogs on hogs. But you are never gong to get all the culls out of the woods.

My dog Lula is both microchipped and spayed. But who am I to judge others? I've been to the county animal control pounds of Jefferson, Liberty and San Jac counties looking for Lula at different times after her epic hunts which she initiates. They have microchip readers there and can scan her and find my name and phone number, as do most vets. I know it works because I've paid the $30 to get her back home before. If you see Lula, she'll wag her tail and walk right up to you. She'll try and come into your home and sit on your sofa. This is what a guy told me after I found her after 3 days hanging out next to his trailer. I found ketchup packages in her stool. The Cleveland pound was just up the road.
Someone posted that they were interested in a good yellow BMC. There were two in the San Jac County pound (Shepard, Tx) when I visited there about the middle of December. One was 90-100 lb dog. (If the guy that runs the place is not there, just stand in the back your truck and look over the fence to see them. The place in next to the country compactor yard.)
On the other hand, if you find my BMCs on the side of the road, and I don't think you will, please leave them there. They won't come to you, they are microchipped, they are waiting for me, and I'll be back to get him.
One other note. There was a guy recently in mid-Jefferson county had gone into his own animal control business. He'd drive around picking up strays that had IDs then call the owner and extort money. Hope he doesn't have a chip reader. I don't want to pay for community services that already exist and were established and are supported by community legislation.

custom-collars.com i just bought all mine new collars they were 4.50 each i think, came with name plates..
Their reflective collars by the dozen come to $5.58 each with shipping. I try to support local business and people I know, but I also have to support myself. That is a good deal. Every dog I have that is walking around age has a collar with my name and # on it. I had 2 Britts out for excercise take off last year the day before we were going to the Panhandle to hunt pheasants. I had no idea where they went. The next morning a guy that lives about 3 miles straight away called and said he had them at his house. I was lucky, the 1st dog he caught had a new collar with no tag. he caught my male, Pivo and got my # and called me. Zach and I swung by on the way home and loaded them up and headed to Dimmit. Cheap and effective.

Well Chance I am offended. No wait I am not at all. But you know Chance makes his own. I paid him to make a couple at the Hunter Extravaganza. They were not expensive, I have paid more for just a collar. He was real busy stamping them out. My dogs have my name and cell number in case some nice person saves my dog while I am hunting. Just like I have seen two hit and runs. The first I looked at the driver and got his plate for the other driver. The second I chased down all the way into the hood and got a good look at him when he tried to ram me. I saw him go down a dead end road and I went back to the big accident scene. When the cops would not go look for him I got a wrecker to follow me. Later they asked me to identify him with a nod. I stood up pointed and said "that is him." When asked why I was not scared I said I was not scared of anyone not brave enough to stand up, admit their mistakes, and take what they have coming. Well I look at the name tags the same way. Man-up and take responsibility for your dogs good or bad.
If someone called me and told me I had to pay to get my dog back I would just ask where to go get my dog. I would show up and ask the person be arrested for theft of my thousand dollar dog. If the dog had a cut vest on it then they stole the vest too and that is not cheap. I do not mind paying a reward but nobody will extort money from me. If the law won't do something I would just post the address online as a warning to others.

Why wounld'nt you put a collar with a name plate on your dog! There are deer lease around here that say if it is not a collared dog then shoot it! If your dog is in the media of 59 I will leave it and I will asure you I can catch your dog!LOL I have been hunting along time and know when a dog is lost and have had many thanks from coon hunters and hog hunters for picking there dogs up and safely returning them I would hope someone would do it for me! Now that there is tracking systems most of that has stopped!

I might make some people mad about some of my statements but come on! If I see any type of hunting dogs on the road I try to pick them up and find there homes! Most never have a collar I call around and ask and someone will call and Identify the dog and I will give it back! But before they go they get a good little preaching about how cheap a Collar with a name and phone number is and I am pretty harsh on them about it! If you own a hunting dog BUY you a Collar with a name plate they are between $8 - $12 ! If you are hunting somewhere you don't want people to know that is your dog then stop hunting! If you can not afford one then stop hunting! I personally think it should be a law if you have a hunting dog then the dog should have an Identifacation collar on it! Take the credit for what you dogs do and the land they are on!
I am sure Krystal UglyDog understands where I am comeing from I have seen her post the most as she puts her number on all the cut collars that she has sold in the past! She has been great about helping people get there dogs back but hell why should someone be calling her when they should be calling the owner of the dog!
I have picked up several that has had nameplates on them and the guys were very respectful hunters! The ones that do not have them seem to be alittle off on there hunting!
So be a good hunter and buy you some collars with nameplates!
I agree 100%

Very good topic and post fellas! To go one step further, this is what I use. I use a collar that has the brass nameplate that has my info on it along with "reward", but I add something to it! I use a slip on tag made by Boomerang Tags. This tag is easily slipped onto the collar and is very large for extra info. I carry a few extra of these tags in my truck console, in the event my buddy does not have a tag on his collar or we are hunting public land where more than one pack of dogs will likely cross up. This way, anyone can easily get our numbers without having to get a microscope out to locate a phone number. I also list my cell, as well as my wife's cell number on my tags. I cannot tell you how many times I have left to go hunting out of town and had a dog get loose or the kids let one get away and I am not in cell phone coverage. Luckily my wife doesn't mind helping recover my dogs when this happens and it pays to have an extra phone number on the dog. We were hunting last year where we were on a very large WMA and no cell phone signal. One of my buddie's dogs ended up hooking up with a crew from another town, they called and got her, exchanged info, and that night I was able to get in touch with them and get the dog back. Now, this slip on tag does nothing to stop anyone wanting to steal a dog, but neither does a collar. www.boomerangtags.com

Cajunjag has a good point. A lot of people are too scared of approaching a strange dog to get close enough to read brass nameplates, especially pits. I did not look at the slip on tag he link he provided. However, it got me to thinking about tying ear tags marked with an allflex on my catch dogs.

I just went out to feed the dogs in the yard. I was enjoying time to pet and give attention without my cur jumping on top of everyone. But then I wondered why she was not there so I called out. She did not come. Barefoot I took off around the house to the poop area but no Mandi. I ran back grabbed my rubber boots, flashlight, and a dog lead. I quickly went along the fence line looking for any hole under the fence, checked and the gate was locked. I knew she had her collar and my phone was with me. Somehow she got out and was waiting by my truck. I was glad I found her. Dogs do dog things and I want mine back. Microchips take time to read the collar made me feel better even though I did not need it.
