I've got a 6mth old BMC that I want to get started. I plan on finding a finished dog in the future but want to get her started first. I plan on sending her to http://www.ushogoutfitters.com/hog-dog-training.htm to get started. Does any body have any experience with this outfitter? As a newbie to hog doggin I'm not sure what to expect once she's done (Hopefully she's got some hunt in her). I plan on waiting till she's around a year old before i send her off. If you know of anyone lookin to sell a finished (or almost finished) dog I'd appreciate the help. Thanks in advance!

I've got 700 acres in Jack CO. I plan on getting her started myself but I don't have any finished dogs for her to run with. When i talked to the above mentioned trainer he said he'll run with whatever style of dogs i want her to be. I want her to be close range and silent. We'll see how rough she'll get but i need to get her loose with some experienced dogs.

Finding land is tuff! But you can train her without haveing another dog! If you ever watched the Red Fern Grow That little boy made the best 2 coon dogs by putting time into them!

I agree! I've raised and trained deer dogs but this is my first Cur. I'm just not sure on what to expect out of her.

I'll bet you can find someone in your area with broke dogs and just take her along, that way you can steer her to the style of hunting you prefer. Just my 2cents, plus I don't trust anyone with my dogs but me and one other fella. to much at stake.

More than likely your dog will be the style she is programmed to be naturally. She will hunt open or silent according to her genetics and she will range out a certain distance because of genetics. Training will bring out the best of her natural ability while teaching her to hunt, bay, and stop hogs.
If this training camp is good at bringing out the best in your dog then it would be worth the expense if you do not have the time or experience to train a hog dog.

  frst off welcome to the board and to the best place for advice you could have found .
there are alot of top dog men on this site including the guys who have already responed.. i will tell you this  the best dog you will ever own is one you have raised and trained your self....       i had a old dog man tell me that 20 yrs ago and it took a while but i finally figured out what he was saying..  
 the dog you train yourself will know your ways and you will know his and that dog will hunt for you if he likes you . you dont have to know anything you can come on here and ask for advice any time, you can read thru it and figure out what will work for you and your dog.   once you get him started find some one to tag along with and that shouldnt be a problem if you have 700 acres with hogs on it  

like said there is alot of satisfaction in raising and training your own dog.

Something that has kind of jumped out at me in this thread is the thought that a dog can be put together like a model car???  I have a friend with a dog there now but she is a Dogo a CATCH DOG.... He is doing some kind of One Out training. Regardless I believe it is different with bay/Strike dogs. I believe that 95% of what a dog can be, it is born with! The other 5% is environment and what it is subject to. Example take a Bluetick Hound, hunt it with close range, Gritty, Hot Nosed, Silent dogs and you are more than likely going to get a Cold Nosed, Long Range, Non Gritty, Wide Open Mouth, Hog Dog.  I know the example is extreme but it is very important to know what you are starting with to predict what you will more than likely end up with. Training only serves to promote what is natural in the dogs genes.

Ballyn---Every one here loves to see a young dog turn on. Im sure you will have no problem finding someone on here to team up with and you wont have to pay them either. I dont know where you are from but if you are close enough to Dallas you can hunt with me anytime! I dont have anything special but we catch hogs.

I can attest to what raider and the rest have said I was only on this form for a few weeks before I had several invites to hunt, I have not went with everyone I got because I'm enjoying training the dogs myself. But I've got advice for any question I've had. Just ask there's a lotta good men and women on here.

 i have a question for all yaw. i am fixin to leave the country again for a yr+ to get bills paid off and make a better life for myself, family and dogs, and of course i wont be able to hunt older dogs and finsh them out and train younger pups. would sending a dog to a place that can help keep them in hunting shape and honing thier skills better instead of sitting on a chain? i wasnt expecting to go anywhere, but like on another thread, with the economy the way it is, i saw my opertunity to make some extra money and get out from under the hand of others. what would be the best option for some1 in my situation?

I am in the exact situation you are talking about right now, I'm in Iraq so i have for sure been in your boots.  I can only tell you what worked for me. I got rid of dogs that I did not need or that i hadn't been working hard enough.  I started getting in touch with my hog hunting friends to find homes for my strike dogs.  a dog here, a dog there kinda deal so as to hopefully not put too much on one person.  my catch dog, a pit pup, my wife's pet, and my blood tracker stayed at home with my wife.  My blood tracker has gotten to go out a couple of times this deer season with friends of mine that have worked him for me.

My brother and I trained our first two dogs ourselves without any other dogs.  We put a lot of time into their training and I think it paid off very well.  You just have to remember to be very patient with them.

Like the others have said, it is very fulfilling to train your own dogs and watch them turn into something.
