Went out this morning to a new spot where a guy had seen some hogs, Took Adam & Abel ( Craig Loftin Blood ) and my hunting buddy Bill brought Deet's ( catahoula ) and Sandy (BMC) Started out like usual not hog sign and lot's of walking, The wind was blowing scent away from us so we made about a mile circle when My Abel dog went to winding towards a hill side that was atleast 1/4 mile away. Now both my pups won't be a year until Mid. Jan. so to be honest I figured it was a coyote, continued on in the circle until we reached the spot where Abel had been winding towards. Adam my other pup blew out hell bent and we watched him work like crazy, It seemed like he was really working and moving out so I told bill to hang out and I would go see if I could find any tracks to see what he was after. The other dogs where following me when I noticed Abel went to working the same track and the other dogs were starting to as well. I was in a huge creek bottom and Adam was on top when I heard all heck break loose and a big deep grunt, I could tell Adam was caught by the sounds of the fight, Once I reached the top of the rocky hill, I saw Adam caught on the ear of a really good sized boar and about then the boar threw him and cut him good on the bottom of his ribs, at this point I'm yelling for a gun, the other dogs and some help. Adam was dripping blood good but stayed bayed until the other dogs arrived, it was then I focused enough to notice the was a huge mob of about 30 to 40 other hogs protecting as many piglets, Adam came over to me while his brother Abel ran in and caught the boar on the ear as bill's pup Dozer had the tail. The other dog sandy and bills dog Ringo ( plott, bmc, cat. plus god knows what else )who I forgot to mention were wind milling the mob and piglets. Abel got tossed and quickly recovered stood back and bayed so I let the boar have a little dose of bills .357 mag. When I shot all the hogs busted and the boar charged out with all dogs on him. Seconds later We heard them bayed again and ran to the bay. The hog was down and all dogs were caught solid. The boar would have went 250 or so and had punched through Adam along his rib cage but not into the ribs so he will be fine, though he figured out he can't man handle bigger hogs. This was my pups 4th hunt in there life and the only hog they have ever seen outside a bay pen. We also caught some of the piglets by hand. Super proud of my dogs first Hog, cut his head off because was to heavy to drag out of that country

Congarats. Its a great feeling to have your dogs turn on and bay their first hog....But how in the heck did you manage to shoot a pistol during a bay and not hit anything but the hog???!!!!! Our dogs are tooo fast and all over the place to ever be able to take a shot during a bay.

Good looking dogs by the way. Smiley

" how in the heck did you manage to shoot a pistol during a bay and not hit anything but the hog???!!!!! "

I have been in law enforcement for years   and I have trained tons with a handgun, shoot alot and was only about 10 feet away in a kneeling position, waited for the right moment and shot. I did make 100% sure it was clear and Thanks I'm super proud right now

Craig we have a mixed up dog we had with us ( Ringo ), he really ain't a catch dog, he is just a catchy dog, I'm raising a bull dog right now but it's to young to go. We are gonna bring one next time if I have to borrow one.

Congratulations Waylon,i know you are mighty proud of those lofton pups and rightly so. That is a hunt you will remember for a long time, nothing can ever beat their first woods trophy. I cant wait to get some kennel space and raise a pair of craigs pups for myself, they are everything i love in a cur dog. Happy new year mate, looks like your off to a good start Wink

First off let me say CONGRATULATIONS!  There is little in the world that tops a pup getting it done the first time. Spectacular feeling!  Very nice boar to boot. I really like the looks of them yellow dogs. Something tells me you have some great memories to make with your young pack. Very nice way to kick off 2011.  I could not be happier for you.  Keep the pics and stories coming.    Grin
