New here and to hog hunting. I have 3 GSP's and one Jagd pup. I was wondering what you guys thought about trying them on hogs. I have a few places up here with pens and thought about trying them out. Anyone here run them, I tried a search and see alot of mixes just wondered how the pure breeds do. I know the germans run these breeds on hogs over there. Looking for info about GSP, GWP, DK, DD. I also know of a guy using DD's on hogs in NC with good reports. 2 of 3 of my GSP dogs kill anything that doesn't have a feather and that is how I want it, but they have never seen a hog we have very few wild ones and mostly pens here in PA.

i dont know how the german short hair is going to do, i just got one from one of my buddies she about 2 and she will bay a hog in a pen pretty good shes bays real tight and is a little bit to gritty but she will just have to learn the hard way, when i let her out of her kennel she dont hang around, deer season goes out jan 31 and feb 1 shes gonna get the test so we'll see

me and a guy were talkin' about how a german shepherd might do as a catch dog. I mean the cops use them catch people. And why not find a pig they find drugs. I know you wouldn't want to run one of them hairy thangs in the summer time. Kinda interesting to think about.

I have never owned any German Shorts but have hunted behind them about 10 times and they did great.I wouldnt think twice about trying one as a hog dog.

Johanees Platz aka Johnathon Plott migrated from germany with a handfull of dogs he used to hunt boar in Germany, later changed his name and started the plott breed. There are a lot more people hunting german dogs than you think

I hunted behind one a couple of times and this dude was a damn good strike dog.He was built like a pit!Would strike pigs then we would go shhot quail and he would retrieve waterfowl.

Afriend of mine on ETHD goes by JAG has a 1/2 GSP 1/2 Cur that is one of the hardest hunting fastest moving hog dogs I have ever seen. You might shoot him a PM Im sure he would be glad to tell you about him. He looks just like a GSP, the dogs name is Frank!

x2.... The Germans test all their working/hunting dogs and must pass a test before registering a dog so these dogs have hunt bred in if it is a sporting dog. |

Reuben makes a good point, but there is a catch. DK's (German bred GSP) are not the same as American bred GSPs. American bred dogs have long been away from some of the hog aspect that Germans still use them for, thus my reason for asking the question. There is a good discussion to be had that the blood is there and all one needs to do is wake it up but it may also be gone since it has been sometime since it was used at all, and from my gathering can make the dog harder to handle for the typical upland hunter. My GSP's have American bacground and my Jagd is all German. I will be testing them both on pens up north here.

I was talking about German bred sporting dogs. There used to be one organization in the US for GSP and wire haired pointers and it is probably still around and they test their dogs.
I will say that it is like breeding any other dog. If there is no program to cull hard then within a few generations the hunting traits will decline or be lost.

I've got an uncle up in Illinois that imported a few Weimereiners from Germany. One of these days i'm gonna try and get a pup out of him. The only bad thing about them is the males are bad to fight and they ain't to keen around strangers (which really is a good thing  ) |
