We were invited by Jug (Kody Landry) to hunt with him today.  We used jagdterriers Bart, Squirt and Killer Jones as running catch dogs to stop this rough boar and put him in a holding pen for our tracking collar study.  Thanks to Kim Crochet, we also have two more larger boars available for the study.  Caught him along the Atchafalaya River, Louisiana.   Here is the story.

Hunt starts with COLD boat ride on the river.  The image is a video of our ride out this morning, click on it to play.  One long, cold boat ride!

Dogs are ready, Jug’s cur Jake and  catchdog Major; Kim’s cur Browny; and my jagdterriers, Bart, Squirt and Killer Jones.  I left my catchdogs at home to save weight in boat, and like I told Kim, if I can get all 3 jags to stay together and not split off on their own hogs, we have never had a hog, regardless of teeth and size get away.  They have stopped some big bubbas.  Just sometimes the outcome is not what one likes as they are rough and the boars then get rough on everything around them with 20 pound dirt piranhas taking turns heeling them.

Browny did his usual lead strike dog thing, located the boar and got out about 10 really good bay barks (beautiful sound!) then I heard Jake join in with a couple barks, then there was the jagdterrier scream by Bart or Squirt as one or the other jagdterrier went for mouthful of boar behind.   (Why can’t these little Croatian devils leave well enough alone and bay???).  So we then hear Mr. Boar breaks bay and heads south with squalling jags in hot pursuit, and we then hear nothing, a few barks and scuffles, then silence, then a little more noise, more silence.  I look at the Garmin and it has “SITTING DOG” icons for all dogs in one location.  Uh Oh.  That means we have a catch going on.  Then more noise and Mr. Boar drags jags off like ear rings, or maybe scrotum jewelry….  I tell Kim , that hog is big trouble, I kind of feel sorry for it, however, I thought it was a victim, not the brute he actually was.  I began to get concerned, as NO SQUEALs.  Not a good thing with all that drama going on in the swamp.  We go about 200-300 yards into the fight, and Jug decides to turn in Major, and then we go another 200-300 to the catch.  Boar is in thick vines, briars and ferns.  Major has a good jowl or throat lock and boar is pinned.  Jags were all over head and ears, and ears looked like big time heavy catch dogs worked them over…. And of course the very conspicuous “Jag rash” on the back quarter!!!  Kim legs hog and turns him, Major comes off surprisingly without a break stick  bred for this - great around other dogs!) and Kim and I pin the boar for hand cuffs and tie straps.  Then we went into rabid photo mode as Jug went to find a deer cart.

Here is Kim and Browny.  This strike was all Browny’s and he should be proud.   Browny is a cur from Alabama lines.  Go yonder high speed stuff – silent track.

Here is Jug and Kim:

Not sure which one is the guide here!

And here is Jug and Kim looking at the wooly coat on boar, or maybe search like apes for insects, ticks, lice, fleas?Huh?  More like a gorilla and a spider monkey???  Ha ! Ha!  LOL.

And here is the really evil side of Jug, I think he has gone made in the next two pics!!  LOL:

And here I am with Bart and Squirt the jadgterriers, trying out my best leer for the camera:

Not shown is Killer Jones jagdterrier.  All are ready to hunt right away.
Here is Browny:

Jug comes back with not a deer cart, but an appliance dolly!  Here is Kim using dolly to cart out boar

Here gravity wins and turns cart over!

Here are some pics of ride home:
Kim rides guard over captive with life jacket over head to protect tusks from metal boat deck.  Besides, state law required life vests on boat passengers under 12 yrs at all times!
