I was seeing if some 14 week old pups I have were gonna show any Interest Sunday and decided to give a dog that I gave up on a year ago and had spayed another chance, He's 3.5 years old now,, thought what the hell it can't hurt, I put him in my pen with 4 sows,75-100 lb, one of these sow is real mean she immediately charges when you walk in or put a dog in, she slammed him to the wall and another sow joined he wouldn't even defend himself, ( he's a pot licker again confirmed ).. Now, I had my 16 month old BMC leashed just outside the gate.. I gave the potlicker 30 sec. to a min. of a$$ kicking from the 2 sows, then I let the BMC in, HE barked twice on the way in and grabbed the mean sow straight on the end of the snout, the other sows wanted nothing to do with that and went to the other end of the pen..got the pot licker out, called my BMC off and got him out.. NOW, here my Question  Undecided Is it better for a RCD or Gritty strike dog to catch on the ear or snout ?? Which way protects him more from Injury when the dog is by Itself ??  After seeing him on the snout of that mean sow, she could do nothing it was just tug of war, no butting of his shoulder or rib area with her snout. Got me to wondering what everyone's opinions would be??

If its a rcd it needs to be ear in my opinion, Cause that what he is a catch dog and thats where i want my catch dogs to catch. Now on the other side if its a gritty strike dog. I think it depends on the size of the hog or how bas azz he is. If its a bad hog wanting to run i like him to bark once or twice and grab butt or nutt. And spin with the hog to avoid getting hurt once he has him in check catch it on the ear. Now not only does it need to catch on the ear, but it needs turn turn his butt up against the hog so that his body is not in the way of the teeth. Soo basically they would be standing side by side. I think on a small shoat 75 to a 100 pounds he could get away with catchin it on the snout cause its not as powerful as a big hog And he could probably control it, But i gurantee you a big hog will run fowards in charge to where your dog is back pedalling that will out your dog in great danger, or it will just shake it off. Now does all my dogs do this? No! Would like them to yeah, but that is what i think a ruff dog should do. IF you get one tht is just really really ruff where he wont even bark. HE is a catch dog. So a ruff dog will get down and dirty, but on the other hand knows his limits and knows when to respect a hog. He has got to be a smart dog if he is a ruff dog or he will not last long. I have one question though how in the heck did you train your dog to just call him off of a hog he is caught on? Cause if my dogs anyone of them are caught on a hog. its until him or the hog die or i break him off. Even in a pen. Just curious of it. I have had people tell me they can call there dogs off, but never figured out how they train them or teach them to do that. I beleive my dogs go deaf when they are caught. There eyes roll in they back of there heads its crazy man.

Ken, I can call him off 1 time, if I don't get a hold of him he'll go back in, and if there's alota people and dogs involved he may not listen, I started him in the pen with a hog at 4 months and he would bay for a bit and finally catch, I'd use the command (pig down) and get him off.. I continued working him like that in and out of the pen twice a week till he way 8 months, at that time I could yell pig down and he would just let go,,I will honestly tell u right now i'm a bit disapponited in him, he was at his best at 8-10 months, had found his first hog and has been a pain to handle since, and has gotten real 50/50 will only hunt every other time we go out,, I hope its just an adolesent thing and he gets back to where he was...

ya man i guess i just never really tried hard enough. when i gt them in the pen they will run from me to get to the pig. It takes 5 people just to catch them when working them in the pen. Sounds like he will, trun out to be good man. He obviously has a good head on his shoulders just needs to get past the puppy stage man. Thanks for the reply.

I own a few rcd and if they catch on the snout they tend to get the under jaw tore up a good bit and on the ear they get their legs tore up to me it's all in the game the rougher dogs you have the more you gonna get cut up but I've learn to deal with it some times I'm out for 2-3 weeks before I'm able to run again but with a rcd I tend to catch more hogs and have more vet bills due to the time they have to fight the hog and even some times they come back cut up and no hog cause they can't bark with a mouth full Jmo
