OH BUDDY, There are a lot....i will just tell ya what i run and im sure every one els will pitch in with what they run.... im guessing what they run would be their prefered breed for catching. i run a full cat(100% catch), full ridgeback(100% catch), and a pit/ridgeback pup that is getting to be a awesome rcd. i personaly think the breed you choose has a lot to do with the way you hunt. we run our catch dogs on the ground with our strike dogs. other people lead their dogs in. it just depends on what works for you and your pack. ymo mrs, kbar

Any breed of dog would probably work as long as it latches hold of a hog and hold on to an individuals liking. An individuals liking is as variable as breeds of dogs are. We have a pit and a pit/dane cross.

This is interesting I was thinking the same thing if pits get banned know ab and dogo but I have a ridgeback and two ridgeback/dogos that are showing promise. Cward has a jrt. Seen a couple hard hitting cats and one bmc that were as hard as they come. What else is out there?

I had a catahoula/ridgeback/pit dog I just sold that was straight catch. And Landen, I don't think we have to worry about pit bulls getting banned.

Pits do a great job. But my wife said no pits. I am trying to get a couple Dogo pups now and maybe an AB. I really like the Dogos personality. But my dad always says you have to be smarter than the dog. So he likes dumb dogs It just comes down to what you like and how much time you want to spend with the dog. But I am happy to hunt behind any dog that gets the job done. cward uses his Jack Russel Terrier and catches hogs. So everything I thought about catch dogs went out the window. Just need a Get'r Done Dog.

Do you mean lock up to the death catch dogs or dogs that catch and let go??? To me pit bulls americn bulldogs are the only catch dogs, the rest are imitators!!! Remember that Great Dane on the tv show the other day? He bit the hog and let go, not a catch dog to me. Airdales catch, rat terriers catch but i dont consider them catch dogs. I have seen shepards catch too, are they catch dogs?? I think the greyhounds I had were more like a pit bull or american bulldog than anything i ever hunted with, they had to have the ear cut off of the hog when they locked up, they did not bite or fight and seemed to always stay locked up even if getting tusked???

Catch and let go? That ain't a catch dog. But that ain't the breed. I have seen pits that I would not call a catch dog, not many but at least two. Lots of dogs will catch, and I do mean catch and hold until you tell them to release. I ain't calling any breed imitators. Because someone will sure nuff show you you are wrong. There are culls in every breed too. Don't judge a breed by the culls.

Whatever works for you. I've worked with Dogos , pits , and AB. I've got one Purebread dogo that will catch on the ear and not let go. It took awhile for her to get going but it's been well worth the wait. Plus they can turn it off right away and go home lay under my wife"s feet like she's never been hunting. I have to get the blood clean off her first. Ab is one hell of a CD and second to none on Pure catching. The pits I've been around IMO just want turn it off. It's more like a fight and alot of damage. But my wife ain't letting me keep a pit in the yard nither is my homeowners INS.

x2.....just becuase its a pit doesnt mean its the best catch dog ever....we hunted pit after pit and yeah they catch well....but they would get to hot and couldnt keep up with our dogs. so we had to find something that had a lil more heat resistance and have some leggs on them to keep up with our dogs and horses. thats why we raised our ridgeback up and trained him on hogs and maybe we got lucky(a lot of people say ridgebacks dont catch good) but this dog catches just as good and as hard as any pit we have owned(same goes for our cat catchdog). when he grabs a hogs ear he isnt coming of till its dead. To tell the truth we dont like for our dogs to stay latched or cought on a hog after its dead. when we say dead hog, get out...our dogs release and move on...maybe sometimes we have to give them a lil pull. just thought i would put this out there so pitman understands we are talking about catchdogs not gritty dogs that grab a pig or hog and let go and grab again. dont want to make anyone mad but like isaid before: it depends on how you and your other dogs hunt and where you hunt to what breed might fit you better. Mrs. Kbar
