Well, I know us gulf coast folks are pansies when it comes to what we think is cold weather, but down here we have cold humidity just like when we have heat and humidity. Seems like the hot and humid is worse than just hot, and cold humid is worse than just plain cold.

Anyway, I got the dogs bedded deep in hay and top dressed some oil on their feed to help it stick to them through the night. Chris used the air compressor to blow the water out of the overhead pipes, and all the buckets are full. The greyhound is in her sweater, and the horses are tucked in (except for the ones who are out tonight on round bales).

I think we are ready for a real cold night. Even though its miserable, I think about how much we need these freezes to help knock down parasites and fleas in the coming year.
Cheers

it was 5 degrees and got up to 11 today with a wind chill of -20 and 48 mph winds. I've stayed inside except to change the water a couple of times and to feed. doubled up all the dogs and got them bedded in hay and barrels. Guess they're learning to get tough. Done all I can do so whatever happens happens. But besides the killing of parasites I really hate the freaking cold.

It was miserable outside this evening and getting icicles on the running hose before dark. bedded the dogs in hay and blankets for the ones on the concrete kennels. Then We finished cleaning a hog, piled all the meat and fat together in a "pork Soup" and fed the dogs the regualr ration of feed, topped w/ raw bones, and hot pork soup on the side.
Equines in the barn with hay, Chickens got a heat lamp, Hogs got Hay and a windblock, and then I got to go out for Mexican food.  The truck thermo said temps were at 27 degrees about an hour ago, and about to go get under the blankets!

Same here Mandi, extra hay in the dog barrels, with a little extra feed. Horses in the barn and some in the pasture with a round bale and a wind block. I will still worry about them all night though, mostly because i feel kinda guilty sitting in a warm house with the heater blazing.  Sad

10PM and it is 20 here ( just East of Hondo ) and not a creature is stirring. I am going to let ZZ and Top sleep inside. They are calling for a low of 16 tonight and 14 tomorrow in Hondo and it is always about 5 degrees colder here . Highs of 34 the next 2 days? Holy cow!!!

i wrapped the 8x8 kennel with blankets to block the wind, put a full bale of coastal in it and fluffed it all, stuck all three of my grown dogs in it together with a heat lamp hanging. those dogs will be fine,

Heres my question for yall i put all ten pups in one of those plastic portable kennelswith two flakes of hay fluffed and closed the door. that is in the kennel with the big dogs and is about 18" under the heat lamp. with the news saying 20 degrees over night, do yall think thats enough protection for the pups @ 7 weeks old or should we bring them in and listen to them whine and poop all night.

I feel guilty too. I brought in the outside horses to feed, and then started turning them back out to the round bale. The first horse went straight to the hay and stayed there. The second horse went to the hay. By the time I got the third and final horse out there, the second one was standing at the gate wanting back in. So, I cut the third horse loose and brought horse number two back inside. She got some alfalfa and grass hay to munch on through the night.

Tomorrow night, the others might figure out that they want to be inside the barn too.

We got hay put out for the cows and the horses yesterday before all this blew in. Just before dark this evening, I saw my pig bedding down in the hay while the horses ate around her. I hope everyone will be okay tonight. I know all those folks north of us have critters dealing with much colder temperatures than we will get, but our critters just don't have much hair. It's now 28 here.

T-bob, 7 weeks old is pretty young, but hopefully they will huddle in the hay and stay warm. Just make sure that heat lamp doesn't get knocked off by wind or dogs and catch the hay on fire. We just had a benefit Roping for a family who lost their home and part of their barn to just that scenario. Even burned up the Christmas pony who was the reason for the heat lamp in the first place.

On the cedar shavings, I would add hay, myself. Hay is a great insulator and they can almost bury themselves in it.

Embarrassed Ok my worrying got the better of me. I just went outside to check on everyone and wound up bringing VooDoo, our cd inside. When I put him on a lead, the other dogs assumed that we were going hunting and all started that whinning that they do when they are waiting to be loaded up to go hunting.  Cheesy Our dogs are all crazy if they think that we would hunt at night in these temps.  Everything is already frozen outside. The puddles and plants are crunchy when you walk on them. Poor ol' VooDoo has the thinest coat so now I feel a little better knowing that he is inside. Of course now he will be inside until it warms back up some because I don't want him getting sick from going in and out while its so cold.
