I have a 8 year old BMC female that i wouldnt mind having some pups out of. What are the chances that she woud take? She has never been bred before ( i was told ). Also, a hog pretty much cut one of her nipples off. If she was breedable, would that affect her as far as milk build up or any other problems?

Trent there are certainly people on these boards that know more about this than me but here is my 2 cents for ya.  Older dogs tend not to have as many pups as younger pups but as long as she is comming into heat she will more than likely take because she is passing eggs! as far as her nipple, even if that one nipple is non functioning the rest are probably fine. Layla raised 11 pups on 8 nipples. There might be a risk of Mastitis with her age and the fact she has never been bred. But I have hunted with that dog and would love to have a pup out of her. Good luck with her

I have really old gyps reproduce just fine and then some that just won't take and when they finally do they only produce a couple of pups. Just try her and see, the mammary gland should not be an issue as long as it is old injury and completely healed.
You could take her in and spend money having her all checked out, but sometimes that don't work either, so I would just try her, and let the male cover her for a couple days in a row.

Thanks for the replies... I may give it a shot once she comes in... The number of pups isnt a big deal, as i would rather have a few and try to train them all myself and maybe give some to close hunting buddies....

Paul, what do you think about breeding her and Fred?  Cool

Not sure if i want that ol Catahoula blood in her though!!!  Cheesy

Training dogs is not about quantity, it's more about timing, the right situations, and proper guidance...After that it's up to the dog...

She will still breed Trent, she shouldnt have as many as a younger gyp would, Ive bred a few 10 and 11 year old shorthairs before and they only had 4-5 pups per litter and the last litters turned out to be the best of all the other breedings.

4 or 5 would be plenty for me Ben, plus i bought a whole litter of plott/bmc pups, so they should keep me busy..

As long as the gyp is in good health she should be fine to raise a litter of pups. I have a 9 year old gyp raising pups now and she did fine. She didnt have but 3 which was just fine with me.

I think Fred would be a great choice. Jeremy said he was a proven reproducer
