Here are some pics of my 5 month old pups first encounter with a hog. The yellow female was all over it, and I had to catch her to get her away from the hogs when I put them away. The brindle male wasn't as into it, he was a little timid but still barked at them, just didn't hammer away like the other pup. Is that just a maturity issue or is he a cull? They did all this without the help of any other dog. Now if they will just get out and hunt when they go to the woods! I was afraid they would be rough because they have a little pit in them but the shoats weighed about 5 lb. and they wouldn't even try to catch them which made me happy.IMG]IMG]

i wouldnt let that determine whether or not hes a cull or not. id give him some time, and let him see some other experienced dogs work in the pen....

those are good lookin pup's ,, that brindle has pleny time to come on, I'd put the piglets in a pen with him and the experienced dog on the outside, then by himself, and work the pup's separate, to me a pup thats a bit more timid will shy back a little when worked with a gritty pup,but show better by themself .. JMO   Good luck with them

Yeah, he's a looker, but looks don't get it done! I wish I could combine her personality and drive in his body!

Id say its a little early to tell how they will turn out but I would proud with what I was looking at so far.  The first time a good hog tries them they may catch or they may never even help catch a shoat.  Early starters are my favorite kind but they don't always make the best dogs so that male has plenty of time to show what he has.

Ok, so I put the pups back in with the shoats today and the yellow brindle pup turned on! At first he would just growl and snap at them and then he started baying. They got a lot rougher with both of them baying and the female caught one of the shoats when it ran past her. They were both nipping them on the rear when they turned and kept them facing pretty well. I got the female off of the shoats ear and turned them back loose again and she bayed but was really in their face with it. They may work out if they have the hunt and bottom to them that their mama has according to the guy that they came from.
